Liverpool has a gritty reputation alongside its fame for sports, music, and nightlife. What many don't know is that the birthplace of the Beatles in North West England has been quietly building its cultural capital in recent years, having been a European Cultural Capital in 2008 and acquiring World Heritage status for its Pier Head Waterfront in ... There's lots to do and see in Manchester, but it's a quick one-hour trip (or less) to get to Liverpool -- a vibrant city I highly recommend visiting too if you've got the time.

I took a train from Manchester to Liverpool for a day trip and walked around the city for about 4 hours. Got to see the bar where Beatles originated.

A really exciting and vibrant city, Liverpool has some great bars and restaurants to entertain younger visitors. However there is plenty to do for history buffs as well with some fantastic museums such as the World Museum and The Museum of Liverpool in the impressively designed waterfront building. Two amazing cathedrals round out the sights in this dynamic city.

Liverpool is known for a few things: football, the Beatles and history. scousers are a proud lot who have seen their city come back from hard times. the city has an optimistic attitude and is quite beautiful as well.

Liverpool is a city full of history. Of course, it's probably most famous as the birth place of the Beatles.

There's plenty of Beatles sites, as well many free museums including Tate Liverpool, a fantastic modern art museum (it's the sister to Tate Modern in London).

It's also home to the historic Albert Docks, and Liverpool One, a massive outdoor shopping plaza. One thing you will definitely discover is that Liverpudlians love fashion.

There's also a great live music scene and there's some cool bars and restaurants. It's a hip city that's moving on from its rocky past.

Looking forward to visiting here again as the city looks amazing! Only spent a quick night here, but from what I saw it looks very nice. Stayed in a friend's flat not too far from Lime Street Station, and had a good view of the city skyline during the night and day.

Update: Still not a proper visit, but a lost driving tour this time! Heading to the Grand National, and parking and the trains were good, but whilst driving/getting lost, I was amazed to see many main sights of Liverpool, even including the Liver Building on Albert Dock, which was really impressive to see. It's much larger than I thought it would be!

Home of the Beatles & the friendliest football derby in the world, Liverpool also has proud maritime history. There's definitely enough arts, culture, shopping, & history for a city break.

It's a funny city with dead zones that date almost from WWII and a lot of rubble in a belt between the docks and the midtown, but it's undergone a lot of gentrification. Be sure to explore the Albert Dock area, which includes a Tate museum.
