London Vacations

If you were forced to pick one city to be a tourist in for a whole year, London might very well be your best choice. In London, you'd probably run into a citizen of just about every country on the planet and you'd eat a good deal of their cuisines, as well. You'd have access to the art and antiquities of both Britain and the world at the British ... Read more
Museum or the National Gallery or a host of other places, endless performances (including Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre), unruly sporting events, and first-class shopping. When it rains (which is less often than most people think), dive into a historic pub for pie and mash or hop on one of London's famed double-decker buses. The public transportation system alone warrants a visit to this worldly city. (Hint: Try Route 15 for a local's view of many sights: Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and the Tower of London.) London is more like the crossroads for, rather than the center of, the world these days. The timeless city effortlessly manages to blend international culture with British pomp in a metropolis of 14 million (the largest in the EU).

Weather

London’s mild climate, with temperatures rarely below 45F (8C) in December and January, make it less intimidating than, say, Finland, as a winter destination. The best time to go is between May and September, ... Read more
however, as long summer hours see the sun set close to 10 pm and relatively warm temperatures (up to 75F or 24C) make for great sightseeing. The changeable sky means it’s always a good idea to dress in layers and pack an umbrella. If you do find yourself in the Big Smoke over the winter, take advantage of the packed theatre season, free museums, and cozy pubs to stay warm.

Personally, I didn't feel very safe walking around London, but this might be due to the fact that I was there late at night trying to find a hostel. The area alongside the river is very pretty but apart from that I didn't feel as though the city was very exciting or hosted anything particularly special. The city was super expensive when compared to other UK cities and I felt as though it wasn't worth my money when I could have travelled to other cities in the British Isles (Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast) and experienced even more culture.

London is classic city and a truly global one. Come to get a taste of all things British, while also engaging with the many cultures that thrive in the massive and interesting capital.

Walking. You get to take everything in on your own time. There is so much history here. Also, the tube is excellent.

London was my hometown for almost three years! Enjoy the sightseeing, but also explore the neighborhood for an amazing feel of local life. Living in South London, I especially love Clapham and Brixton!
