The exterior doesn't look like much but walking in you're met with turquoise paneling, glass paned windows that stream in tons of natural light and true to its name, lots of greenery outdoors by the pool that makes it feel like an oasis in the middle of the city. All the rooms have patios and the newly renovated suites are really expansive and homey. Despite it's rock and roll history, I felt a really calming vibe, more of a retreat than a party. I'm not sure if that's based on the day or if the hotel is trying to re-brand themselves to attract a different crowd but I was really impressed and found this little hotel charming. It's right next to the Magic Castle which is a must see and be sure to check out Yamashiro's, a sushi bar in the hills overlooking the city.

Janis Joplin overdosing here is either a selling point or an ominous sign (room #105 BTW). The former Landmark Motor Hotel, aptly located at the bottom rung of the Hollywood Hills, has a rich “party hearty” history that dates back to the ‘50s. The classic Post and Beam architecture looks like it’s gotten a fresh coat of paint and an updated lobby, but the refurbishings, while nice, seem cosmetic. The dated rooms are in need of an upgrade (dusty air conditioners, creaky mattresses) and the full-kitchens advertised in the standard rooms are nothing more than a microwave on top of a mini-fridge. The bright spot is a lush, garden courtyard with a splash-worthy pool. The centralized location, within walking distance of Mann’s Chinese, Hollywood Bowl, Runyon Canyon, draws a hostel-crowd of young foreigners looking for a good time.

This hotel doesn't look like much from the outside, but when you step inside you are stepping into rock and roll history! This hotel has been a temporary home to the likes of The Rat Pack, Jim Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and even Siegfried & Roy. This is also the hotel where Janis Joplin tragically overdosed. The rooms are nothing special, but if you like history and want a clean place to stay with a vast history, The Highland Gardens Hotel is for you.

Hi I never leave reviews but I need to on this DUMP! Dont be discouraged by the main entrance the rooms are just the opposite! This is more of a housing low end complex than a hotel. My wife and kids stayed their and soon as we walked in where in displeased with the stinch and low quality .. And not to mention my wife is in a wheelchair and it is not handicap friendly which was never mentioned when I paid for the room over phone. No parking aswell! Room was a negative 10 nasty and couldn't wait to get the hell out of their plus their was a big party the first night which kept us up till 4am along with a huge fist fight to end the night. I told the manager the next morning and they where so nice they gave us $20 off our bill lmao! Please do yourself a favor sleep in your car before u stay at this crap hole!
