Think of the Hollywood Hills Hotel (or Triple H to Angelenos) as a sort of magician’s assistant to the Magic Castle. That is because one of LA’s most prized and private institutions also runs this quirky hotel as evidence by the hotel’s defacto lobby, which is located inside the members-only mansion. A 24-hour shuttle ushers you up the hill to a gated, mixed-space property, adjacent to another LA institution (Yamashiro) whose upper-floors are reserved for permanent residents. The expansive rooms are basically one-bedroom apartments with kitchens and balconies offering Instagram-worthy pics of the LA basin (Griffith Observatory, Hollywood Sign and smog). Everything is old-school (hip) or (I can't even) rundown, but the pagoda pool is unanimously a winner and that was before I found out about the popsicle hotline (ask for yourself).

This is an offbeat property, and even the hotel itself goes overboard in qualifying it to potential first-time guests. It’s not for everyone. First of all, it shares its real estate with residential units, which can be off-putting to those used to upscale, resort-like experiences. Others think it’s awesome to feel like they are living in the Hollywood Hills. And the rooms are very much like apartments. The views are a major plus. As is the pool, which overlooks the hillside, and sits right next to Yamashiro’s historic pagoda.

However, the hallways around the rooms are very dark, even in the daytime. It’s a quiet spot, but the rooms could use a renovation. It’s also sort of funky because you have to stop first at the Magic Castle Hotel and handle your check in there. Then you can either drive yourself up, or a shuttle will take you. Personally, I like the place.

This hotel really captures the romance of the Hollywood Hills, and makes me feel like a movie star from a different era. The view of LA is fantastic, all twinkly and sparkling at night. It’s private, really quiet, and the big beds are soft and poufy with wonderful sheets. I love the Spanish tile floors and the living room is comfy enough. I’d say it’s very charming. I can see the Griffith Observatory right across on the next hill, and the pool has cute little stone pagodas. It’s right next to the famous Yamashiro restaurant which is a fun, fancy sushi restaurant though pretty expensive. But there are tons of other great restaurants and bars nearby in this part of Hollywood.
