Although it shares a name with the prestigious luxury hotel brand (Ritz, not Milner), this retro-hotel is anything, but grand. Well, there is a grand piano in the lobby, but that’s about it. And, that’s not such a bad thing, especially if you’re on a budget and want a taste of DTLA. The 12-story, 1920’s building rises above a drab city block with a stunning wrought iron and grey-brick facade. The original, restored interior, is creaky, but well-kept, although the small rooms with the tiny bathrooms and even tinier closets could use a sprucing up. The best part besides the low-price is the centralized location and the colorful dive bar in back, Back Door Pub, which is straight out of a Bukowski novel. The downside, like most of the area, is parking. The hotel doesn’t offer ANY, but the underground structure next door charges $18 a day.

Starting with the grand piano in the lobby, this tasteful and traditional place conveys a British atmosphere (or perhaps Scottish, in this case) without an ounce of stuffiness. This historic hotel (since 1924) feels classy, with classic furnishings. Not the Ritz Carlton but it’s authentic, clean and cheery. With free Wifi in rooms, free Bally’s Fitness Center admission and an adjacent breakfast room with complimentary waffles, bagels and more, this deal can’t be beat. The comfortable rooms range in size from standard to suites and even the smaller economy version is comfortable and really reasonable. In back, happy hour at the cozy Back Door Bar serves three buck beers and popcorn with pay parking at nearby lots. In the middle of downtown, it’s an easy walk to explore downtown attractions and the rest LA offers like nearby museums. All they need is some tea and scones for an authentic feel.

This was our hotel of choice for my concert adventure with some friends (yes, all 12 of us and then some). It is close to the Staples Center/LACC/Nokia LIVE Theatre/Club Nokia. And I only need to it to sleep and get ready to have fun.

The hotel is an older one with tiny bathrooms and okay beds. The staff were very friendly and helpful, answering all my questions.

The price is fairly inexpensive. I booked through the hotel itself but after reading other reviews, will book through other websites to get an even cheaper deal!

I booked a regular room and a deluxe suite which meant instead of an extra double bed, I had a pull out sofa bed and a larger vanity area. And a larger bathroom. Which is important when you've got 8 girls getting ready in one room.

Also, they have a buffet breakfast. I really liked that they kept the yogurt cold and two waffle irons so you can make your own waffles! YUM! The only reason to go to the buffet is to make your own waffles.

I wouldn't recommend walking back to the hotel at night but would cab it back instead. Call Yellow Cab instead of any other car rental service the staff may give you. They are cheaper and quicker than the other.

I immediately felt comfortable as we entered the lobby. With it's warm yellow paint and traditional European furniture I felt right at home. There was classical music playing low throughout the building and this too was soothing.
We were greeted warmly at the desk and offered a look around.
On the ground floor all guests can enjoy a free continental breakfast or fresh waffles in a sunny clean dining area off of the lobby. I'm a Tea drinker and loved that they have a big selection.
We where shown two rooms. They are a little small but have big comfortable beds with good linens and pillows and the rooms are very tastefully decorated. The bathrooms offer your basic assortment of shampoo and soaps but the towels are large and soft. They also offer in room coffee makers and stationary.
Guests interested in keeping in shape while visiting can take advantage of the Bally fitness center next door for free, just show your room key at the desk.
The rooms are very reasonably priced and I think it's one of the best deals downtown. This is a place I would recommend to family or friends coming to visit L.A. It is well located within walking distance of many points of interest as well as great restaurants and the Metro. There is also an intimate Pub located behind the check in desk, a great place to unwind before hitting the town or a nice place for a night cap before bed.
In addition to being located so close to several terrific restaurants there is also a mega Ralph's grocery store two doors down offering sushi and other yummy treats for those that just want a quick but high quality lunch or dinner.
