Description
In 1998, an adjacent storefront on then-sleepy Third Street became available and Joan’s lifelong dream of opening a gourmet foods marketplace and café came true. Joan transformed a narrow retail space ... Read more
into a charming gourmet take-away. Over the years, Joan’s on Third has evolved into a culinary emporium, offering an extensive selection of cheeses, olives, freshly baked pastries and carefully selected gourmet retail items from around the world. The thriving café has become a haven for people seeking Joan’s signature sandwiches, salads, soups and seasonally inspired foods. Susie, Joan’s younger daughter, joined her mother and sister after graduating from Georgetown University’s School of Business in 1998. Susie devotes her energy to running the Marketplace - - hiring and training the staff, making sure Joan’s new hires truly do live up to the family name. Susie has incorporated Joan’s love of family and friends into a signature style of service. After working together for several years, Susie married Chester Hastings, a talented chef from San Francisco whom Joan had met and hired in 1997. Today, Chester works closely with Joan, developing new recipes and sharing creative ideas with Joan everyday.

Staple spot for a sure thing when it comes to a casual brunch / lunch on 3rd street! Quality ingredients and a huge variety of foods and hot meals to choose from. This place is always bustling with locals in for a casual meeting over coffee or sit down meal with friends/ family. Seating is limited inside while the patio usually has space. Joans serves up generous portions of salad, take home gourmet meals, fancy snack boxes, tasty treats and excellent coffee. In a mini- gourmet grocery shop setting, the prices are a little steep, but to be expected for it's prime location. You cannot go wrong here.

Great food in a bakery/deli environment. It can get crowded, but the food is worth it. I highly recommend the short rib sandwich, but it looks like everything there is delicious.

Delicious Chinese chicken salad and baby field greens. Market place and bakery are great to pick up stuff for your kitchen.

If you're in the mood to eat at home but you don't feel like cooking, Joan's on 3rd is a great place to go if you don't mind a bit of a splurge. Amazing selection of main course meals, and spectacular treats (caramels, honeys, wines) to take away! If you feel like dining in, they have great patio seating.

Fancy American breakfast/ brunch type food. They have the best home made potato chips. They also have a huge collection of eggless desserts/ sugar free (not sure) desserts.
I'm told it's s good spot to catch famous people.

Came here because of all of the raving reviews and ordered the short rib sandwich and the southwest salad. The short rib sandwich was a bit greasy and the southwest salad was huge SO I would recommend splitting with someone if you're planning to eat those items :)

Good range of ready made food in a deli venue - very similar to jak's in London. I didn't love the salmon but my friends enjoyed their chicken. Good brunch place

Joan's is so so good!! It took us a while to order because we could not decide what to get. We eventually settled on a salad bar/side sampler of three items (curry chicken, brussel sprouts salad, and israeli couscous), the chicken breast sandwich, and chicken wings. The chicken sandwich was pretty forgettable, but what really stood out was the salads. I loved all three of them and ate with gusto...and I am generally not a salad person. However, we hit the trifecta with these three.
The cafe is really crowded (we went during the week for lunch) and parking is a bit of a pain to find, but I would absolutely come back to eat more salads (and perhaps try the desserts too).
They also have a marketplace that has a lot of appetizing-looking cheeses, dressings, baked goods, etc. I will definitely be back!

Fantastic deli and sweets! They change up their menu all the time, so you can never get bored coming here all the time. The service is excellent and it's in prime location. I recommend the turkey meatloaf sandwich yum!

At first glance, Joan's can be a bit intimidating. It's a combination of bakery, restaurant and specialty market so it looks pretty chaotic, but it's actually not so bad. The staff keeps it under control and are quite attentive if you do dine there. I recommend the short rib sandwich - I love the combination of short rib, jack cheese and arugula.

Pricey, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and diversity of offerings. They have a handsome cheese bar, charcuterie, desserts, and a lovely glass display filled with salads/sides to go with whatever you're cooking for the night. In addition, you can order sandwiches and entrees to go or dine in. The walls are lined with shelves stocked with specialty items like olive oils, nuts, and wines. They also have bottles of wine chilled and ready to go. Perfect place to swing by when you have to bring something nice for a host/hostess or pre-Hollywood Bowl. I'm usually there in the evening when it's not busy at all. I imagine brunch is probably the busiest time.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches as much as I love mac & cheese. There's something so comforting about it. As I was browsing my emails, I stumbled upon an Epicurious recipe for short rib and grilled cheese sandwiches. Oh my! I thought it would be a great way to reinvent leftover short rib meat should I ever decide to make it again. I passed it along to my friend Joa K. and noticed that the recipe was from Joan's on Third. A little epiphany hit me and I suggested to Joa that we go and try this delicious sandwich and see if we can make it at home. So we did, we went to Joan's on Third and ordered the short rib grilled cheese with homemade pickles and caramelized onions to share. It was really good. The bread had a nice crispiness to it; the meat was braised tender. The cheese was gooey and the pickles were sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich.

We also had the strawberry cream puff which was really yummy. It wasn't too sweet and it wasn't too heavy. Total bill was about $16 for two people. Not bad if you share. Joan's on Third is really a gourmet food market with tables so you can eat there or order to go. It's got a very trendy vibe but parking can get hectic. I can't wait to try my hand at making the sandwich though.

The food's good but overpriced, the portions are pretty small. Crowded and hard to find a seat on the weekends. It's not a bad place but I just don't feel like it's worth the trouble or money.

This is a great place to grab brunch, though it can get very busy. Try to find a parking spot in the back of the restaurant, but if you park in the tandem spots, you may be asked to move your car if you're blocking someone. You can buy slices of fresh meats or cheese or try some of their breakfast sandwiches or breads. The chocolate croissant is a must have. If you want to eat there, grab a table as soon as you see one open. They can be hard to come by as people like to lounge around chatting and people watching.

I have been coming here for years. If I am going to the Hollywood Bowl or some other potluck/picnic type of event - this is my go-to. Brunch here on weekends is also relaxing and delicious. Top picks: Chinese Chicken Salad, mini cupcakes, anything from the bakery section.
