Outdoor oasis on the east side of Los Angeles. Rent a paddle boat and hang out with the local hipsters.

After the rehabilition finished in 2013, Echo Park Lake has been restored to its former glory. The park's checkered past as everything from the center of the silent film industry to a favored rendevous for drug dealers and buyers will satisfy any history buff. But the walking paths, greenery, floating library, and colorful locals make this park a perfect place for a quick walk or an afternoon picnic.

Peaceful park with a great view of LA!

I finally checked this place out during the hidden cash craze. My boyfriend and I had some time to kill so we drove to Echo park when the famous hiddencash twitter hinted where he's going to hide some money.

The park is clean and I really loved walking around it. Parking was a pain because of hidden cash so I can't really tell you if it always suck or not.

They have a jungle gym for kids and picnic tables.

Echo Park is a really lovely area that I didn't really spend time in so much as pass through while visiting a friend. It's scenic and quieter than downtown LA, but has a lot of nice spots (at least it seemed to while driving around)!

Soon after I moved to the Silver Lake/ Echo Park area the park closed for renovations-- for two years. I was so bummed! However, those two years flew by and the wait was so worth it. The park is beautiful; the city did a wonderful job. The lake is clear with lotus flowers and lillie pads thriving everywhere. There are nice benches all throughout. Vendors sell goodies like shaved ice or roasted corn-on-the-cob. And most importantly, the community is truly enjoying it. I was here just last weekend and there was such diversity-- old, young, single, families, residents, tourists-- all enjoying what the park has to offer.

A lovely oasis in the heart of Echo Park with views of downtown buildings peaking overtop. It's a nice place for families, joggers, picnics, and dogs. It used to be full several different types of birds. But the park has been under renovation for the past 2 years. Hopefully it will reopen in Spring 2013 so I would wait until then to visit.

Echo Park and Silver Lake (they are next to each other) are pretty trendy places to be these days (aka a lot of bars, art galleries, music venues, etc.). If you're into a more youthful and artsy area, this would be an ideal place to settle your roots. Plus it's not too far from Hollywood, Griffith Park, and Westlake. Depending on how you're getting around Southern California, staying within LA would be a great way to see the city's extreme diversity and all it has to offer.

As a kid we used to rent peddle boats and peddle our way around the lake. Not sure if the area is sketch these days haven't been in a while although I hear Echo Park/ Silver Lake is more trendy these days so maybe?! I also got my swimmers license at the public pool there when I was 6 years old!

Take a hike at Echo Mountain and Inspiration Point

Distance: 10.4 miles round-trip

Getting There: From the 210, take the Lake Avenue exit north from Pasadena into Altadena. Continue on the road as it climbs a hill and park on the street near the sharp left hand turn outside the Cobb Estate. This winding hike takes you along a historic railroad route to the ruins of a turn-of-the-century resort. We definitely recommend starting this hike in the morning so you get some shade during the first part of the trek. Otherwise, you’ll be in the sun most of the time – and this is not a short hike.
