I love the improv and the comedy and the people and the train and it's a great comedy club to go to take all your friends

At Hollywood’s most legendary comedy club, surprise appearances from names like Dane Cook and Steve Byrne are almost expected. There’s a mixture of improvisation, both experimental and produced, as well as stand-up acts most nights of the week. The iconic brick-backed main room is for the headliners—an up-and-coming Jay Leno once helped paint the ceiling. Next door is the Lab, and quite often, this is the place to be. With nothing to lose but pride, comics here leave it all on the stage, no holds barred.

Although the LA Improv was the second of the franchise (the first was in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York), it was the original site for the A&E Network television series An Evening at the Improv, which ran from 1982 until 1996. The Improv was the place to see Richard Pryor, Robert Klein,, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin, Jay Leno, and others when they were just starting out. Dustin Hoffman played piano there. On any given night in the later 1970s, one could see Gilbert Gottfried, Joe Piscopo, Larry David, and many others. Often famous comedians would walk in to “work out” before appearances on The Tonight Show. It was not unusual to find celebrities in the audience. Comedian Eddie Murphy was a regular at The Comic Strip in New York City, but in California performed at the Improv when he was only 15 years old, and Jim Carrey at 19. Actresses Karen Black and Debra Winger worked there as waitresses before getting their big breaks as movie stars.

Last night, I went to the Improv in Hollywood for the first time. I had been to the Laugh Factory several times, the Brea Improv, etc.

I had a good experience. Their drink service was pretty fast. The restrooms were conveniently located and close to the stage.

It was all on one level, so this made it a little smaller and cozier than the Laugh Factory in Hollywood. Some of the comedians sat near the back and heard the jokes.

Brendon Walsh was the headliner and he was hilarious. He has great presence and delivery and seems like an awesome guy. His jokes are relevant and make sense, plus they're really funny.

This location has no bag service. Some places do, so that would be nice.

The front bar area played Daniel Tosh's stand up comedy, while we waited for the show, but I couldn't hear it. There was regular noise and one or two other stations on other TVs. The captions would have been perfect.

Overall, this place is cool and there weren't any hassles. Smooth sailing, lots of comedy. Plus, I went to the 10pm show and they decided to let everyone from that show stay for their midnight show for free. 2 for 1 comedy!
