Is this L.A.'s coolest theatre? Quite possibly. Double features from legendary directors, obscure films, rare prints, amazing guest speakers (I saw Richard Linklater introduce a pair of Tobe Hooper flicks here)...not to mention the fun atmosphere.

The screening room is decked-out with portraits of silent-era stars, the theatre itself is a throwback to the old Hollywood days, and the midnight screenings are rowdy and social. Curators the Cinefamily are world-class film lovers who keep the calendar rich with classics, cutting-edge indies and forgotten gems.

offers a constantly rotating program of silent, classic and new films, often featuring special guests. check out their website before your visit and see what's going to be playing. and then have dinner up the block at animal, one of LA's best restaurants (advance reservations required) or late-night at canters deli.

A quaint little spot where they feature an awesome range of foreign, indie, obscure and old films. I went recently to see a Miyazaki film, Porco Rosso, here.

There isn't much of an slope in the seat arrangements so you may have to strain over people heads in front of you to see the entire screen. Not much selection in the food department here, but they did sell Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches when I went.

There's paid parking for $3 across the street at a high school parking lot and very limited street parking.

This used to be the only theater still running only silent movies in the world until recently. Now its under new ownership but is still showing some silent films as well as some films with sound. It's not that flashy or nice inside, but it's a lot of fun to see these old films from the silver screen days, up on the big screen. The Cinemafamily is an organization that puts up a program and sometimes they have speakers for the films! - http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/index.htmlcheck their website here:
