Maastricht Vacations

Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, and is beginning to grow into a very popular tourist attraction thanks to it's unique old world charm. Walking through the streets here is an experience that will take tourists back to medieval times, with cobblestone streets and rustic abundant old, yet well maintained, examples of ancient ... architecture. The city touts one of the foremost havens for artwork of the "Old Masters" at the Bonnefantenmuseum museum; where works by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck are on permanent display. The remnants of the city wall, and the beautiful Vrijthof are a few other man made attractions, the latter of which plays host to an annual European equivalent of carnival before lent. Maastricht is also home to a few noteworthy natural attractions, of which one of the most popular ones might be the extensive Saint Pietersberg Cave system. The site of the 1992 treaty that brought into existence the European Union, it's no wonder Maastricht, with it's combination of amazing modern and historic splendor, was chosen as the host city of this monumental future-focused agreement. For an experience that is one of the most vibrant to be enjoyed in all of northern Europe, this somewhat little-known city is a great alternative vacation destination to keep on your radar.

MAASTRICHT Can you be a tourists in your own country? Yes you can. But to understand that I like to explain something. Netherlands, however small, is divided into 12 pieces or better said 12 provinces. 12 provinces, each with its own character, but at one point they are all equal. So are the provinces of North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Noord Brabant and Limburg, Overijsel all working by means of water management in the process of dry feet. Compared to the mostly low-lying provinces of Netherlands, Limburg is however to call by its hilly terrain, High. With the Cauberg mountain as highest point.
The capital of the most Southern province of the Netherlands ,Limburg, is Maastricht. Maastricht is one of the oldest cities of our country is best described as a truly exuberant city and can fit easily somewhere in France, in short, very different than most cities in Netherlands, and I may say it as an Amsterdammer tourist. Residents of Maastricht are fond of music, good food, fashion and Carnival. The Vrijthof Square and the adjacent Cafés are really worth a visit. World famous are the Concerts on Vrijthof Square by the Johan Strauss Orchestra under the inspiring leadership of the Maastricht conductor André Rieu. This concert is visited each year by hundreds of foreign fans. If you do not know this Orchestra and André Rieu look on You Tube. Maastricht is only a 30 kilometres drive to Liege in Belgium and a 30 kilometre drive to Aachen in Germany. Maastricht? Go! Just Go!

Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in Holland. Wander along the city walls or down its cobblestone streets. Churches and an assortment of other buildings hundreds of years old co-exist with restaurants and a wide variety of stores.

This town near the Dutch-Belgian border is one of my favorites in the Netherlands.
It is small and easy to navigate and mixes the cultures of both countries in an interesting way.
The Caves of St.Peter are a highlight.
There are many spas that have outdoor pools overlooking the scenic town of Valkenburg.
I highly suggest the spa experience!

Vying with Nijmegen as the oldest town in the country, Maastricht has become something of a call-centre capital, hosting the likes of Mercedes Benz and DHL. Redevelopment continues apace today with the "City Centre in Motion" scheme, whose most recent contribution is 't Bassin, a spruced up inland harbour north of the Markt, with restaurants, cafés, shops and galleries. Other parts of the town make for delightful walking territory, especially the older quarters such as Stokstraat.
