I can't wait to go back here again some day. It is such a lovely island to kick back and relax. No cars allowed, so you can only walk, ride a bike, or take a horse and carriage to where you want to go. Lots of cute little shops, and the Grand Hotel is spectacular!

St. Ignace and the boats to Mackinaw Island are only an hours drive. Be sure to plan to spend a day at the only place in the world that you can smell Lilacs, Fudge and Horse S$&t at the same time. Take a carriage ride tour and visit the fort for an amazing lesson in history.

In the early 1800s, Mackinac Island was becoming a popular destination for wealthy travelers and tourists. As the popularity of automobiles grew through the years, horse drawn carriages were as essential to tourist activity then as they are now. And for the purpose of public health and safety, preserving the quiet streets from the noisy automobiles that scared the horses, the cars were banned in the 1920s!

Stayed on the island for two days and left early walking away from a high priced hotel because of the smell. There are 700 horses on an island less than 4 square miles and you can smell every one of them. Everyone should see the island's history but a day trip is all you need.

Excellent biking on the island around the perimeter loop, which is next to the water's edge, or throughout the small streets that run amongst beautiful, historic homes and wooded areas. Make it to the top of the hill to see the famed Grand Hotel and incredible views. The strip where the ferry lets off is the island's most commercial location, featuring several fudge shops and restaurants with typical American food.
