The epitome of the lap of luxury without being pretentious, Catalonia Las Cortes is a great option for travelers who are seeking to be in a central location close to the Metro and the action but quiet enough for the buzz to not be a deterrent to a good night’s rest. The concierge at this hotel is particularly helpful, as they will help you to map out your day and give suggestions on where to go and what to do if you’re overwhelmed (which you probably will be upon arrival). I chatted with the reception for a good bit of time about all the amenities and attractions nearby. All rooms are a decent size as well as being an affordable, competitive price.

Catalonia Las Cortes is absolute luxury for any travellers to Madrid. The hotel was once a palace and still has the original entrance and staircase (although both have been restored of course!)
The staff couldn’t have been any friendlier and I had a great chat with the porter about the history of the hotel. He was able to tell me everything that I could possibly need to know and took me on a tour to show me the stained glass windows and library.
The hotel was so quiet and peaceful inside that it was a relaxing break from the busy city outside. It’s located in one of my favourite barrios of Madrid, just a few minutes’ walk from anywhere that you could possibly need to get to.
Their menu looked delicious and I would love to go back and try the food sometime. The rooms were huge, with a complimentary mini bar included in the price, as well as complimentary slippers and toiletries.
They hold larger events in the hotel too, including weddings. Fingers crossed I’ll be back!

If you need to spread out, think about going for an Imperial Suite. It’s like your own 18th century Madrid apartment - with a large bedroom, separate lounge and walk in wardrobe. Also I haven’t see many Spanish hotels with in-room coffee and tea making facilities - all the superior rooms here do. The hotel bar seems mainly the haunt of hotel guests rather than locals. But, just alongside the lobby, it’s calm and casual and not a bad choice for your first drink of the night. The hotel restaurant’s menu looked delicious (I’d kill to try the beef fillet with foie, sauteed chesnuts, cinnamon and wild asparagus), but with so many famous tapas bars and restaurants just outside the door, it’d be a brave soul who decided to stay in and eat.

When I read Catalonia Las Cortes used to be a palace, I was sceptical. Even on arrival I still wasn’t sure - the lobby and pleasant downstairs bar didn’t seem particularly palatial. But then I opened the door to the room. Parquet floors, original marble colums, antique furnishings and a bed that just kept on going. But I still hadn’t looked up. Covering the ceiling were intricate, beautiful and completely restored frescos. What a sight to wake up to every morning. And the lavish tone continued into the bathroom - it was ample size, spotless and done in polished dark marble. Just around the corner, Plaza Santa Ana hums with al fresco diners and Huertas’ narrow streets perfectly evoke the city’s medieval history. I would happily return - after a day wandering in the Prado, it’s a unique treat to come home to a hotel room that feels like...well, the Prado.
