Malawi Vacations

Often heralded as 'the warm heart of Africa,”' Malawi rarely disappoints travelers with its miles of freshwater coastline, rugged terrain and tremendously hospitable people. This boomerang-shaped nation gained its independence from the U.K. in 1964 and has seen a relatively stable and peaceful existence since. Many vacationers enjoy visiting this ... Read more
country not for its cities but for its marvelous stretches of coastline along Lake Malawi and its interior mountains. At the southern tip of the lake, head to Liwonde National Park to see Malawi’s wildlife: crocodiles, hippos, elephants and spotted hyenas. As you move north along the lake you will find a fair number of hotels and resorts that cater to travelers. Here you will find ample opportunity to partake in some of the world’s best freshwater snorkeling and diving (some 500 species of fish call Lake Malawi home). At the northern tip of the boomerang you will find Nyika National Park, popular with hikers and the adventurous at heart. The people here are incredibly friendly and their food is equally delicious, so be sure to enjoy all Malawi has to offer.

Whether you're looking to relax on the sparkling shores of Lake Malawi, indulge in the consumption of delicious chippies (potato fries) in Lilongwe's market, or hike the lower mountains of the Great Rift Valley, you will quickly discover the warmth and beauty that Malawi offers.

One of my favourite places on earth. You can find accommodation for as little as £4 a night. Go on an unforgettable safari to spot the big five, and stop off at villages to meet some of the friendliest people on the planet. Time your visit around the Lake Of Stars Festival which is growing more popular every year.

Lovely Lake Malawi, the jewel of this otherwise landlocked country in central Africa, has earned Malawi the reputation of one of Africa's greatest finds -- an easy-to-travel place with natural beauty, friendly locals and low prices. And while I can't dispute the prettiness of areas like Cape Maclear or Mt. Mulanje, I find that the line about Africa's friendliest people somewhat stretches credulity. With a pronounced 'muzungu' culture, it's a country in which I typically felt like money on legs, and found the friendliness to often go no deeper than the superficial. Lodging may be cheap, it's true, but food and sometimes transportation costs can be inordinate, and while the Lake certainly ranks as one of Africa's neatest spots, it does not in itself a five-star destination make.

I can't tell you how many of my clients didn't even realize that Malawi was a country - and how many of them ended up naming it their favorite of the 8 countries we'd travel through on our overland trips. Hands down, Malawi has the friendliest people I've met anywhere. You leave feeling like family - part of a really, really big family. Lake Malawi is gorgeous and diving or snorkeling in it really is like swimming in a well-stocked aquarium. The wood-crafts they make here are some of the best souvenirs you can take home from Africa.
