nice enough property, but there are some serious problems that I can't overlook. The lobby is sleek and modern with a California cool vibe. There's a lobby bar and restaurant and they have the new electronic key check-in (if you check in online before arrival, you can bypass the front desk and use your smartphone as a key to unlock the door to your room). The employees are never that friendly but are efficient enough. This property inexplicably attracts lots of foreign tourists. I guess it's a package hotel because there's nothing that screams "L.A." about this place (there aren't any ocean views, etc.). If you're after a great view, try someplace else. Most of the rooms at worst overlook a concrete barrier wall (see my photos) and at best a parking lot. Speaking of parking, the hotel screws you by charging a whopping $25 per night to park! The lot of uncovered and not very well secured at that. The rooms are an average size (by Los Angeles standards) and they are very comfortable with a nice desk, small but updated bathroom, an in-room mini refrigerator, and Doubletree's signature fluffy beds! Yes, you get a warm cookie at check-in at Mdr too! The hotel is within walking distance to a mall with some restaurants and shops as well as a grocery store. This being a suburb of Los Angeles, nobody really walks anywhere. The hotel is a very short drive to Venice Beach too, one of the coolest areas in the entire city. The hotel restaurant has a quite good breakfast buffet and the seating overlooks the pool area. It's a cut above most hotel breakfasts, with assorted yogurts, housemade granola, flaky pastries, eggs, fresh strawberries, and crispy bacon. I'm not a breakfast person but I found plenty to eat, and it tasted good. This would be a solid 4.5 star property except for one MAJOR negative: this hotel has those $#%@! motion sensors on the air conditioning unit so your a/c shuts off in the middle of the night. This is Los Angeles. It's hot. It's humid. And it's impossible to sleep when your room is miserably hot and the air stops circulating. Our room got hot as blazes so we had to go to a nearby Walgreens to buy a fan just to keep ourselves cool enough to sleep (didn't work). I can't sleep when I'm hot and sweaty, and the Mdr should be ashamed of themselves. In an act of sheer desperation (with sweat dripping all over my body) at 2:00 in the morning, I started began to literally rip the a/c motion sensor out of the wall. Upon trying this, I stumbled upon the secret of disabling the sensor -- REMOVE THE BATTERY! Here's how it's done: look up for a round sensor by the ceiling and pull it out of the wall so you can throw out the battery. See my photos for visual directions. Once I figured that out, my room was as cool as a polar bear on an iceberg. Nobody should have to suffer, especially when you're paying upwards of $300 per night for a hotel room.

A functional hotel on a good for work location (far from the beach) with a nice bar and swimming pool.

I was very impressed by Hotel MdR. They did an amazing job with renovations. The lobby is sleek & modern. The pool area is divine. It has great comfy cabanas & even a Koi pond. It had a very resort like feel. There's a nice restaurant/bar called "barbianca." MdR has a ice fitness center overlooking the pool area, with TV's on each treadmill. The rooms are great. 283 of them. They have fun wall art throughout the hallways. They are pet friendly with only a $75 pet cleaning fee. Across the street, they are opening a Ruth Chris steakhouse. There are other nice restaurants & shopping close by. It's only a short 15 minutes to LAX. The staff was great & very friendly. I'd come back here & recommend to anyone.

This hotel is pricier than what I'd usually go for, but it was an anniversary getaway. It was renovated 3 months ago so everything looks great. It was comfortable & clean. Wi-Fi was free but breakfast isn't.

This place is a newly converted Doubletree (used to be a Courtyard Marriott) and while it's an older building, the furnishings are still nice. Ceilings are quite low compared to more modern buildings and the area has quite a bit of ambient noise (particularly emergency response sirens). However, it's a nice location if you're always stranded at the hotel without a car like me - right across the street is the brand new Marina Place with a dine-in movie theater, fitness center, Gelson's Market (in the basement), and tons of restaurants that will be opening soon. Right next to the hotel you'll find some other establishments including a Barnes & Noble. You're not far from the marina so you can just stroll over there to enjoy the waterfront. Parking does cost $15/night but we didn't end up getting charged, woot!

This is a stop over for pilots & flight attendants who come & go at all hours. Nothing scenic about the location. You can walk to places to eat but it's on top of a shopping mall. Not for me.
