settled in the area. That original settlement has become the popular Mediterranean port that it is today through the centuries and thus has a rich history of shipping and architecture. Some of the many points of interest in Vieux-Port include St. Victor's Abbey, among the oldest Christian churches in France, Phare de Sainte Marie, and the Canebiere.

Lots of life happening in le Vieux-Port. Performers can be found just about anywhere, and there are tons of little shops and restaurants along the pier. The port is filled with beautiful little boats

This is THE place to be in Marseille, with so much to see and do, day and night. The U-shaped marina is lined with restaurants, as well as old forts, churches and museums. In the morning, fishermen set up tables to sell their catches while in the evenings street performers and vendors arrive to sell souvenirs and food.

Marseilles old port. It is dominated by two large fortresses. It used to be the center of southern french shipping, though it was devasted by the Nazis in WW2. It is now mainly used as a marina. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants around the old harbor, with excellent provenecal cusine and fresh seafood.

The Vieux- Port (Old Port) of Marseille is a fantastic place to explore and wander around. Imagine getting off the metro station and riding the escalating and seeing the harbor, sea glistening against the sun rays, and the Mediterranean-style buildings. That's the charm of the Vieux-Port. Exercise caution at night, but other than that, take pictures and enjoy walking around the port.

Marseille is over two thousand years old and has always made its living from the see, thus it should come as no surprise that the Old Port is the heart of the city. The harbor itself is basically a giant rectangle with two large fortresses built by Louis XIV guarding the entrance. Lining the eastern flank you'll find many of the best bars and cafes in town while on the west are the nicer hotels and mansions. When I was in Marseille for three days, I spent each night hanging around Vieux Port.

Fish market every morning, only 20 mn drive from the house. Excellent location for evening cocktail and walk around to admire the boats.

Dominated on one side by the Panier (Old Town) and on the other by the church of Notre Dame de la Garde, the Old Port, or Vieux Port, has been the beating heart of Marseille for 2,700 years. Today the entire waterfront area is a favourite spot for both locals and tourists to stroll, drink, argue, fall in love, peddle sunglasses and generally hang out and enjoy life.

Old port. Daily fresh fish, seafood and flowers market, Music, shops, restaurants- you'll get a good feelings. From there you can catch a ferry to Chataux d'If, or bus (cheaper than train) to Notre Dame de la Garde.
