Grands and Léon get most of the attention but strolling through Masaya offers a great glimpse of every day life in Nicaragua. Famous for its craftsmen, you can schedule to see the hammock makers (if you are serious about buying) in their workshop or artisans making wooden rocking chairs. Wander about and get lost. Stop in a panderia and buy some pastry. Check out the market for the touristy souvenirs.

Random tip: don't let the "helpful" fellow recommend you repark your car by the market. Best to say you are wandering about or don't understand. Just looking for parking protection $.

Visiting Masaya is delving into Nicaragua’s tradition and folklore. Catarina city is perfumed with exotic flowers, nurseries and elaborate gardens, known as garden city. Here, I discover a high viewpoint over Apoyo Lake, a 4-mile-wide volcanic crater lake. This vantage is covered in restaurants and handicraft stalls, and a healthy mix of locals and tourists (many domestic).
Masaya is famous for it’s traditional folk dances, revived by the region in the 1960s. The costumes are a strong part of Nicaragua’s identity, originating from different regions and with different associations. Festivals, such as Easter, are a great time to see the dances and costumes paraded to life.

Nice little town famous for its market and volcano. The market is the best shopping spot that we saw on our visit to Nicaragua. The town is also home to a number of small shops / boutiques.

Lots of fun since you can drive right up the rim of volcano, but its hard to breath with all the smoke coming up from the volcano.
