Ever wondered how incandescent lava looks like? You can see it from up close at the Masaya volcano! A bit of a touristic spot, but still worth the trip. The area is a National park and while you can organise day hikes and trips, there are lots of tour operators that will happily just drive you there, let you see the lava, and drive back. This is one of the most accessible volcanoes on Earth, because you can drive up till up close to the crater. Definitely not suted for the adventurous types, but still a fun activity for a day.

Fantastic breathtaking! This active volcano offers amazing views whether you looking down inside or around. Unique and worth checking out.

After hiking Mombacho one morning, we charge up a mountain road in an old pick-up truck towards the mouth of Masaya volcano. Surrounding open plains are gusty. A short walking trail leads to the edge of the crater, where I attempt to peer into a sunken hollow, greeted only by sulphurous outpouring of thick white plumes of fog, volcanic dust and ash.
The crater is overlooked by a 33-foot cross, erected by Spanish conquistadors in the 15th Century to bring peace to the ‘gates of hell.’ The rolling plains of the reserve are a great place to spot toe national bird, Motmot and pretty white national flower, Sacuanjoche.

This volcano is lovely from a distance but fails to impress up close. If you've never gone to a volcanic crater and it isn't out of your way, worth a stop -- but overrated and really just a crater hidden by a relatively stagnant gas cloud that could easily be mistaken for fog. You won't see lava, fumeroles or much of the crater itself.
