Take a trip back to the 1920s and visit the golden era of Art Deco in Miami Beach. About 90 homes listed on the historical register display the colorful architecture of a bygone era, and most of them have been restored. One of the homes belonged to the late Gianni Versace; situated on Ocean Dr., it's a gorgeous renaissance style villa recently turned hotel that many people come to visit. On this boardwalk front street, history can also be seen in the cars. Many vehicles from the 1950s are parked in front of the Art Deco hotels. One car has a dummy of a black-clad mobster with an AK 47 in hand, resurrecting spirits from the past.

So much of Miami is like stepping into another world either like you are in another country or in this case another time.

Art deco is the soul of Miami Beach, and walking through this district transports you back in time, to 1950s glam Miami. This distinct architectural style is dressed with cool pastels to ward off the sun, and its windows, shapes and motifs are the hallmarks of Miami. You can spot art deco buildings all over the city, but nowhere like on the beach. There are a few companies that do walking and bike tours, as well.

Driving through this area of Miami is like being transported back in time. The old hotels and motels, the kitsch style of the Art Deco era - it's like a mini-southern Vegas-esque place. I don't know how to properly describe it, it just looks and feels like being in a movie.

South Beach, Florida has been called the American Riviera and an Art Deco Playground. Yet there's more than fine white sand to South Beach's fantasyland of exuberant Deco architecture. South Beach offers an eclectic mix of world-class boutiques, galleries and stores. It's also a culinary hot spot for gourmet to casual cuisine. At night, South Beach comes alive with crowds dressed in party-casual chic.

The visit of Art Deco District could be a really nice couple of hours experience. art-deco buildings cover about thirty blocks of hotels and apartment houses dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. During 1979, the Miami Beach Architectural District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearly all the buildings have been restored and painted in their original pastel colors

If you can get past the traffic, this district is what South Beach is all about! It's what you expect South Beach to be visually and it doesn't disappoint. Be sure to view this area in both daylight and nighttime hours.

Avoid driving during predictable heavy traffic hours.
