The word “Grand” in the hotel’s name is not misleading. It truly is a grand destination. It has a merchandise mark, many restaurants, a Starbucks, a pharmacy, gym and hair salon. In the words of the concierge, you never have to leave. The Doubletree is connected to The Grand, which boasts a number of rentable condominiums, all with balconies. The two share a gym, warming pool and four-way jacuzzi. The views of the bay from the pool are awe-inspiring, definitely worth the visit. The fountain at the courtyard connecting the condominiums is one of loveliest I've seen. Aside from the thirty eight floors of luxury rentals, the Doubletree also boasts a gorgeous ballroom, the setting of many weddings. The ballroom has an outdoor area with awesome views the bay. It’s a bit pricy with valet parking costing thirty dollars a night. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend it for special events.

Walking into the hotel, you feel like you're in a mall with a gift shop and shopping center before the actual lobby. There even is a restaurant that bustles with bodies all around the bar for a 5-7pm Monday-Friday happy hour, plus a restaurant inside the actual hotel called Casablanca which has daily bar specials as well. The rooms are spacious and AC is ice cold. The majority of the rooms have a terrace overlooking either the bay or the city either or works well. It's an older hotel and the bathroom smelled a bit like bleach, but it's relatively quiet and nice for the traveling businessman. The spa/health club is bigger than most and seemed very well taken care of. This seems like a hotel for an older crowd simple because of the outdated decor. Could use some sprucing up inside like the outside that they're renovating.

Its location on the city side of Biscayne Bay made me think this was mostly a business hotel, but apparently it gets quite a few leisure travelers, too. The pool was being renovated so I wasn’t able to vouch for that when I dropped by, but it’s set to re-open in a couple of weeks and Doubletree guests can use the pool at the hotel next door in the meantime. Tony Chan’s Water Club has great views of the marina and there’s a new restaurant coming to the hotel soon, too. In the meantime, Los Gauchitos Steakhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rooms aren’t huge but are comfortable and come with coffeemakers and new, 47-inch TVs. To make the most of the water views, ask for a room with a balcony—in some cases it’s just $20 more and worth it for the bay views and fresh air.

This is quite possibly the worst big name hotel in Miami, and I don't say that lightly. Not located in an overly-exciting part of downtown, the benefits of staying here go downhill once you walk inside. The entire first floor feels like an outdated centro commercial shopping mall you'd come across in some Latin American backwater. Also, many big hotels in Miami seem to have privately-owned condos that are low key and not overly noticeable from the main hotel. Here, it's the opposite, the condos have precedence, and hotel goers must divert to a back room lobby area and then jump through a series of security hoops just to get in the building. Once up at the level of the rooms (via an un-cooled elevator ride), you're treated to a claustrophobic atrium with a design landscape that feels several decades late. Positive side, the rooms are decent and the pool is pretty nice. But that's it! I'd rather stay at an airport hotel than ever come back here!
