There is so much hiking and mountain biking on this mountain, which is nearly all protected open space. You can also drive nearly to the top and take a short walk to the peak and it's great views of the entire North Bay area.

Gorgeous hike with plenty of incline (just the way I like it). Also, plenty of long stretches of shade! There are various trails that you can pick from as well as different levels of difficulty. There is free parking on the bottom of the trail next to the main road. It took 3.5 hours round trip to complete the hike at a relatively fast pace. Without a doubt, going up was definitely easier than going down (for me, at least). There is less control going down and you have to carefully shift down sideways for the last stretch because the dirt and lack of rocks make the path slippery. For beginners and children, definitely start on the top. The 360 view at the top makes it all worth it!

The West Point Inn at the top of Mt Tam is incredible. Book a room or cabin and hike up for the night.

A great place to go on a clear day if you want to have a fantastic view of San Francisco bay. There are miles of hiking and bicycle trails and even a small museum dedicated to the gravity car type of train.

Wow, feel on top of the world above the clouds with a panoramic view of the Bay! You can drive up and hike less than half a mile to the top of the Easy Peak or make it an all day hike from one of the lower parking lots. $8 cash parking fee.

Mount Tamalpais isn't a very large mountain but it's bigger than anything else in the immediate vicinity and therefore offers sweeping views across the Bay and down the coast. It has three summits but the East Peak is the highest and has the best situation view-wise.

Visitors can take drive up, hike from various elevation points or cycle. While you do see road bikers training on the hills, the area is especially popular with mountain bikers. Mount Tam cyclists played a role in pioneering the sport in the 70s and there are lots of fire-road trails for riders today.

Great hiking and mountain biking throughout this watershed. Biking is on fire roads, not single-track, but still challenging. Find beautiful reservoir lakes. Wide open space from Kentfield all the way to the ocean. Find one of our guidebooks in the house or purchase a map at the Pan Toll Visitor Center. Take water with you!

Mt Tam provides great views over the north-western portion of the bay. It seems that the narrow winding road up to the lookout is a magnet for all the cyclists in the area, it is packed so be careful when driving.

Incredible Mountain - it is the heart of Marin, and many Marin towns. Separating West Marin (agricultural communities along the Pacific Ocean) from "Marin's San Francisco Bay side.

Our home is on the south east slope of Mount Tamalpais. Hikers, backpackers and mountain bikers all thrive on the multitude of hiking trails and amazing vistas throughout this state park. There are numerous hiking recommendations online. Highlights include viewing a open-air performance at the amphitheater, see http://www.mountainplay.org, or check out the Mountain Home Inn for a rest after a day of hiking. Both Muir Woods and Stinson Beach are at the base of Mount Tam.

While nearby Muir Woods gets all the press, Mt. Tamalpais, beneath whose slopes they're nestled, is no less stunning. A favorite for cyclists and hikers (there are hundreds of miles of trails in the park), the grassy southern slopes of the mountain near the summit offer one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Bay Area - a view out over the Pacific and the peninsula stretching away to the south. Best of all, the crowds of Muir Woods are nowhere to be seen. Go at an off-peak time and you might not meet another hiker.

Mount Tam provides the highest point in Marin County for views of the Bay area. There are plenty of places to hike, bike, and explore. Downhill bike rides from the top are especially fun.

The "Crown Jewel" of Marin County and quite possibly the entire Bay Area. Considered by many to be the birthplace of the Mountain Bike. Hiking and biking trails lead to the historic West Point Inn. Views, lakes and dense forest make for an unforgettable journey.

Beautiful hiking with endlessly varied terrain, from huge ocean views to shady redwood groves to breezy chaparral. All you need is sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and a sandwich.

OR: Discover mountain biking on the mountain where it was invented! Loads of biking trails for the adventurous, and bike rentals too.

Hike on Mount Tam. You can take a ferry (the kids in my life love boat rides too!) across the bay, trek through the redwoods at the bottom of the mountain, and then climb as high as you want or the kids make it, and have some truly spectacular views. Fragrant bay trees are just one magical element of the nature here.
