Mombasa Vacations

Kenya’s second largest city, Mombasa is as distinct from Nairobi as Los Angeles is from New York. With a multicultural populace and an economy built on coastal tourism and ship trade, the city challenges all African stereotypes. Warm and tropical, Mombasa’s influences are as Arabic as they are African. Closer to the Seychelles than the Sahara, ... Read more
Mombasa is filled with the seedy coastal charm of a port city. Attractions range from water sports on white sand beaches to souk-like alleyways with Arab-owned curio and textile shops. Visit the 400-year-old Fort Jesus historical museum, toast the sunset with a dawa cocktail upon a traditional dhow sailing ship, or dine on Arab-African fusion cuisine in casual or high-end restaurants at beach resorts north and south of the main city.

Arab forts. Portuguese architecture. Perfect palm-fringed beaches. Clear turquoise water. Kenyan culture. Fusion food by default, with a population that has included residents from China, India, North Africa, Great Britain, and surrounding East African nations. The train to Mombasa is one of the best parts about coming here. You're guaranteed to see giraffe, elephants and other wildlife from your dining car seat.

Mombasa may sound like the evil lion from the Lion King but it's actually a sultry, steamy seaport full of Graham Greenish characters and echoes of the now defunct slave trade - narrow alleyways, Portuguese forts and crumbling colonial villas. Raucous nightlife and the nearby postcard beaches of Tiwi make Mombasa a most beckoning port of call in East Africa.
