Description
An iconic sight in Naples, this medieval fortress (its name means, ironically, New Castle) has five towers & a Renaissance triumphal arch, as well as an art museum.

It is pretty impressive to see this castle as you arrive in Naples as it is quite large and imposing. It has five large towers and a white triumphal arch at the entrance way. The inside now houses a museum, and probably the most interesting thing to do here is to walk on the glass floors to see the items below and within the walls.

This castle is absolutely beautiful on the outside with a beautiful back drop of the ocean behind it and the port. This castle was first erected back in the late 1200's and was a beautiful construction with a huge courtyard in the middle. Unfortunately most of the castle has to be seen with a paid tour guide and the only real relics left are the tombs under the castle that you can see through the glass floor.

This is the first authentic European castle I've been to, so I can't say that I have a lot to compare this place to. I saw it from port when we cruised into Naples, so it was a great place for us to go to. Since I love castles, I could hardly contain my excitement when I saw it. The castle is currently being used as a municipal art museum, and much of it appears to be off limits, but it was still a great destination to go and see and imagine what life might have been like when it was actually used as a castle.

From the outside, the Castel Nuovo does look formidable, a closer look, it is revealed that it is in need of more care. It is nevertheless an important and famous symbol of Naples.

Overlooking the bay this giant castle makes you imagine renaissance napoletano counts plotting their next move, or watching the horizon for hostile ships. Great lookout point, beautiful structure.

The first time I came to Naples, I saw the Castel Nuovo from outside. We went to the port and zipped off to Capri. I vowed that I would see this perspective from the other side when I returned, that I would see the port from inside the Castel as if I were looking back at myself through time and space...

Too much?

Okay :)

Castel Nuovo isn't the prettiest. I despise how the numerous office rooms in the castle are left visible, destroying the effect of being in a historic place (fax machine, anyone?). That aside, this attraction is quite cheap, and you get an art exhibition and bits of an old castle. I say "bits" because there's simply not much here.

But what makes it all worth it is the room where you can walk above the old parts of the castle on a glass floor. It's funny to watch visitors freak out as they walk, understandable as the effect is thrilling. You feel like you're hovering over old walls and even skeletons (creepy, yeah!).

I haven't been inside - I don't even know if you can go inside - but this castle is worth simply looking at. With turrets, ramparts, a moat, and arched walkways, it's the perfect icon to satisfy childhood royal fantasies.
