Nelson Vacations

The thriving, small city of Nelson, set on the coast in a broad basin between the Arthur and Richmond ranges on the northern part of the North Island, is a beguiling place. Initially it is not much to look at, but on longer acquaintance it gets its hooks into you and the Nelson region has become one of the most popular visitor destinations in New ... Read more
Zealand. A warm, sunny climate, access to good beaches and a cluster of worthwhile wineries in the hinterland are powerful lures, but Nelson is also supremely placed for accessing Golden Bay and three national parks – Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and Nelson Lakes. Over the years it has become a bit of a haven for artists and hippies as well as the outdoor adventurers. Something for everyone.

My favorite town in the South Island! Stayed here during winter. It rained a lot but at least its still warmer compared to the other towns in the S.I.

I had built Nelson up in my mind as some kind of idyllic, relaxed beach town long before I got there - which it's not. There's no beach at all and while there are some wonderful backpackers around, there is little to do in Nelson itself - everything decent is half an hour to an hour away.

There are probably many great things about Nelson, but I never could forgive it for not being what I'd anticipated (though this is my own fault!)

That said, there are some great easy walks along the river

Great place to visit in Northern South Island region. Close to Able Tasman Park. The region boasts great wineries with wonderful back roads.

I spent a few days in Nelson. It is a cute little town with a bit of an international backpacker scene for all the travelers making their way around the South Island. I stopped here primarily to check out the World of Wearable Art Museum.

Downtown is compact and has a lot going on-- shopping, restaurants and bars. We enjoyed going to the Farmers Market and wandering the many green spaces. Restful.
