I’m always shocked by how quiet it is down in this part of the city. But then again, it is a bit out of the way of most city sights. The Marriott is tucked down one of the calmest stretches of street down here and it has one of the most impressive views of the Freedom Tower available in the city. Literally when you walk out of the entrance and look left, you are confronted with the enormity and drama of the structure. Ground Zero is close. Wall Street and Battery Park are both a short walk away. The hotel is next to a bar and burger joint, which is handy for folks craving the popular American food. In the hotel itself, they serve continental breakfast and even have appetizers in the concierge lounge, which has tons of windows offering spectacular, serene views of the water. Only real bummer is that the free Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby.

This dog hotel near South Street Seaport is a fantastic option when you’re leaving town and have no one to dog-sit. Staff is super attentive and considerate in alleviating your worries and qualms due to separation anxiety. They will keep you updated with all of the goings on with your pet while you’re away. The space itself is big, with many different rooms and play areas, including a spa, fitness center, night club, restaurant, and even a theater screening canine classics- I love this cheeky nod to real hotel amenities. A variety of nutritious foods for all types of dietary needs are available, and all of the water is purified. There’s an air purification system and even a Japanese infrared sauna- it’s all very state-of-the-art. But most importantly, dogs receive all of the love, care, and attention that they need, by staff members who are certified Pet Care Technicians and trained in CPR and First Aid.

Fetch Club is a great new hotel for dogs with a massive amount of space, down by the South Street Seaport. We think Chauncey loved his last visit there, but it's hard to know, because it got cut short by Hurricane Sandy. Forced to evacuate their canine customers, Fetch Club handled the situation as well as they possibly could and helped to keep me from losing my mind, which I was apt to do, because we were stuck in LA at the point when they needed to evacuate. Luckily, we had friends who picked Chauncey up from Fetch Club for us, but Fetch Club sent me tons of personal email updates, before and after Chauncey's forced departure-- and they were very reassuring and nice, amidst what I'm sure was a massively stressful situation for them. We will be back! Praying the weather gods are smiling at us while when we go to France next week....
Update: Chauncey had a great stay at Fetch Club and I loved getting updates from the great, very attentive staff, who were both honest--(admitted that Chauncey was, as I suspected, staging a hunger strike for the first couple of days we were gone)-- and clearly very committed to their work--(gave me regular updates about Chauncey's diet, medication, new friends, etc)

Overall, the hotel is nice, but it's far from the majority of popular things to see and do in NYC. However, one of the pros of the New York Marriott Downtown's location is that it's located in the financial district and within walking distance to Ground Zero and a short subway ride away from Battery Park where you can see the Statue of Liberty from a short distance or take a ferry over to the island.

Great location, room was clean, fairly cheap if you're staying with five people in a room. I highly recommend people to stay here if you want to be in the center of it all. Great view of the World Trade Center site also.

The Marriott far exceeded my expectations. First of all, it was gorgeous. The decor is fresh and modern, and the Marriot is now so upscale that they sell their own (luxurious) bed linens through a catalog in the room. The location can't be beat. From our window we looked out on the Hudson, with its yellow water taxis speeding past. Three blocks to the south is the bottom tip of the island, where you can lean against the balcony of Battery Park and feel like you're on a boat as the waves ripple past just a few feet away. The Statue of Liberty stands tall in the harbor to the southwest. Joggers, in-line skaters and folks with baby strollers flow past in a happy stream, while kids play on the curving staircase that affords a view of the water from on high. Plus it was a bargain with a capital B -- less than $150 a night in October 2010-- a full $100 below the average nightly cost of a New York hotel room.
