The iconic wavy details with pops of red of W New York in the Financial District greeted me along with its mirrored tiles adding to its the grandeur. The white waves are as nostalgic as the 'white wing or whale' in the Westfield World Trade Center a few blocks away.

Their lobby is also a popular venue for exclusive parties, but alas, my timing was off during this trip and didn't experience it for myself.

True to its W brand well known globally, I was excited to be greeted with its plush bedding and toiletries by Bliss. Take note that there are two entrances for this hotel as one is for the residences and the other for hotel guests.

What's special about this W is its proximity to the 911 memorial site. In fact, it overlooks the hustle and bustle of One World Trade Center. Lucky for me to have a bedroom with that view, which is a popular photo opp.

My overnight stay was not enough to indulge in the well-regarded happy hour at the W's Living Room Bar + Terrace. I can just imagine with its cool vibe, it would be the perfect spot to soak in the new downtown Manhattan landscape and sip a cocktail or two.

Speaking of soaking in, a torrential downpour joined my goodbye party, but it didn't affect my mood a bit. The bellboys on the ground floor helped me find a cab driver who ended up waiting outside, so I was fairly dry from the rain before a red-eye flight back to the city by the bay.

The W New York – Downtown is close to various subway stations, a PATH station, the NY Stock Exchange/Wall Street, Brookfield Place and its underwhelming French market Le District, and is right across from the World Trade Center Memorial site. During the day, the immediate area is quite busy , but at night, there’s not much going on…it reminds me of many other US downtowns once 5pm strikes.

Already, I was not a fan of the hotel due to its lobby not being on the ground floor. There was an air of arrogance in the staff, and this also holds true in W hotel nomenclature –- managers are called “talent coaches?” In any event, the lobby was avant-garde, had a patio and refreshing lemon water. Bathrooms were unisex.
The room too had a trendy feel with curtains that didn’t seem too easily closed. Someone’s heard of The Standard hotel. Also, wifi was not free.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the pomp.

This downtown outpost of the W chain is everything you would expect from the brand- trendy design, innovative technology, signature service, and a hip experience. Besides the usual sort of amenities, W rooms feature their signature beds and bedding that will wrap you up in a cocoon of comfort. I loved the walk-in rainforest shower and great smelling Bliss products provided. There’s a great gym onsite that’s very well equipped overlooking downtown New York. For a great burger or drink, the BLT Bar & Grill is located downstairs and worthy of a visit, or indulge in a sip and a nibble in the Living Room Bar & Terrace. The hotel overlooks Ground Zero, so expect lots of construction going on all the time. This wall street area is a bit of a dead zone in the evenings and weekends, but the subway station is close by and there’s some great dining and bar option a short walk away.

I am a big fan of the W chain, so it pains me a bit to only give this place 3 stars, but I can't give it more today. I stayed here with my wife and 2 kids for 5 days on a trip that spanned both business and pleasure (a weekend wedding). This is the newest W Hotel, and it is absolutely beautiful, with a cool, stylized lobby area, very nicely appointed room, and an pretty amazing location overlooking ground zero. The staff was off the charts helpful. The doorman, Greg, greeted my kids by name every time and went out of his way to help us hail cabs or track down anything we needed. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom spacious. Overall, pretty nice. There were only 2 big downsides for me. The first is that while the construction site at Ground Zero is interesting to look at, they are working 24 hours a day, so at night there is a low rumble all night that was tolerable but not ideal. The second was the internet. The wi-fi, in addition to being very expensive ($15/day per device!) was incredibly slow - so slow that even simple things like email were pretty painful. So as much as I would like to recommend this property to people, my sense is there are better options, especially if you need internet access for work.

Love this hotel because of its convenience to Downtown Manhattan. Saves lots of Cabs. It is the newest W and so everything is well new. Super clean compared to the beaten up W on Lex where I usually stay. Service staff is super polite and helpful. The location is a little shady at night. Always cop cars stopping rif raf and dead in the evenings. So not the best location for hanging out locally.

Lots of noise at night. Hotel was empty and they did not bother to upgrade me. As a frequent platinum guest very lame.
