I love Charles river Canoe and Kayak. I used to take lessons with them! They do great programs at one of their three locations as well as advanced travel ones where you go to a different town every day! TIP: if your in the market for a Kayak check with these guys in the fall. You can usually get a gently used top of the line Kayak at a substantial discount!!!

Charles River Canoe and Kayak is a great way to see the skyline of Boston while enjoying a beautiful day. The views cannot be beat and it's great to get a little workout too!

The best way to see the river? Why, from the water itself of course. This company actually has four rental locations along the river and you can actually rent for one way! For example, you can rent at Allston and kayak to Kendall and return it there so you can save time instead of kayaking back (although there is a $10 one-way fee). They have hourly or daily rentals along with season passes, and they also do guided tours of the river or the harbor. It's a great resource to get out on the water while you're visiting, they rent out all kinds of things from canoes to kayaks to stand up paddleboards and row boats!

I usually use the Boston and Cambridge locations, but this company is great for renting kayaks anywhere.

Nothing is more awesome than spending a few hours relaxing on the Charles inside a kayak chasing ducks, observing swans, admiring water lilies and docking here and there to grab some water or just to chitchat.
They offer everything from paddleboards to canoes to kayaks to paddleboats, which comes in various sizes to accomodate for solo adventurers to accomodating a large family of five. $20 for a 1 hour tandem kayak experience on the beautiful Charles at our own pace? Yes please. Boy, they are popular on the Sunday, there is an unending line of customers pouring in constantly, but they've got efficiency down to a science, from processing start time to finding a floatation vest to grabbing a paddle, to getting the exact transport that your heart desires, the seemingly hectic scene has its own order, half self-serviced and half aided by super helpful staff. Despite the crowd, we were on the river in no time.
Kayaking on the river is a completely different experience from kayaking on the ocean. Without the heart pumping invasion of waves, it's almost serene and more attention is paid to enjoying the scenery, observing the river wildlifes: dragonflies, swans, ducks, birds that I cannot name and the plentiful of plantlifes that thrive on the river. Being closer to civilization, the human interaction with the river can be witnessed at every turn. Everywhere, something special can be discovered, whether it's a group of enthusiastic volunteers who are there to clean up the overgrowth of algea on the river; or an island dock with plentiful of free bottled water for passerby kayakers to trench their thirst; or a family of kids, moms and dads taking photos of each other on separate boats.

This is one of the multiple locations along the Charles river, a novel way of seeing Boston and its natural beauties.
