Oakland, named, appropriately, for its oak trees, is one of the Bay Area’s larger cities. Home to actors and writers from Gertrude Stein to Mark Hamill, it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. Radical political movements such as the Black Panthers originated here, perhaps inspired by Oakland’s excellent weather, ... Read more

The San Francisco East Bay covers a lot of ground, from the buzzing cities of Berkeley and Oakland to the vineyards of Livermore. As much as the scenery changes, so too does the weather. On the coast, the ... Read more
weather is mild year round, with daytime highs ranging from the 50s (10-15C) in the winter to the 70s (21-26C) in the summer. Inland, winters are mild but the summers can get very hot, often topping 90F (32C). Like all of the Bay Area, rain is extremely rare during the summer, but you should bring a jacket no matter when you travel -- nights in Northern California are cool year-round.

Oakland gets a bad rep but this place is home to so many hidden treasures whether it be a restaurant, music venue, or park.

The bigger, bolder San Francisco neighbor, come here for great beer and a glimmer of that old timey Bay Area that is fast disappearing.

Oakland is home to the Raiders and a massive Ikea. It also has wonderful local treasures like Yoshi's that you can discover.

Up and coming in some parts Oakland is fairly expensive but still fairly rough around the edges.

Before I moved to the East Bay, I had so many misconceptions about Oakland. You don't hear much of the good stuff when you live in SF, unfortunately. Less than five years after I moved to the Bay Area, I bought my first home… in Oakland!

Oakland has so much going on, I'm not sure I can capture it all in this review. It is thriving. There is so much culture, so much history, and so much character in Oakland. There is so much to do/see/eat here! Lake Merritt is great for an afternoon picnic or a scenic jog. Jack London Square always has some sort of festival and it's right on the water. Temescal seems even more hipster than the Mission. You can get lost in a forest at Redwood Regional Park then hop over to Fenton's for a massive ice cream sundae before catching amazing live music at the Fox Theater or Yoshi's. And best of all, you can do all of this without the crazy crowds you'll surely find in SF.

I'm proud to call Oakland my home.

Don't believe everything you've heard about Oakland, full of great people, neighborhoods, a lot of culture and booming small businesses. Public transportation is easily accessible and just a train ride away from the city.

Oakland gets a bit of a bum rap compared to their more glamorous neighbor, San Francisco. Although some areas remain a bit more gritty, there's lots of interesting bars and restaurants to entertain locals and travelers alike.

This review is limited to East Oakland since I haven't explored the other parts as much. I really love the Southeast Asian food in East Oakland. So many mom-and-pop shops and hole-in-the-walls. And I don't think I've ever seen so many taco trucks in my life. So many on International Blvd. In general, there is a lot of cultural diversity in Oakland, which allows there to be a wide variety of food available in the town.
