The Washington Inn is a smaller more intimate option in downtown Oakland that is still deeply central, located just across the street from the convention center and 12th Street BART station. The decor is decidedly masculine -- mahoganies and hardwood, oxblood tapestries and deep blue carpets.
The grand piano in the lobby promises occasional live music in the evenings.
The elevator is an adorable hand painted installation with open air wrought iron corners -- the contraption is 103 years old!
The whole feel of the place is sort of antique old world charm -- the staff is small and seems to all do everything.
Located right in the heart of great restaurants and interesting local goings on, I recommend the Washington Inn! A great place to stay.
This hotel has such a great personality! From the moment you walk in you are transported back in time and it almost feels as if you were in an old castle, in a good way. The furniture and all has been updated, from the lobby, to the restaurant and the rooms everything looks clean and crisp.
The staff is very friendly as well, and knowledgable about the area. The Oakland Convention Center is right in front, literally, so if you are here for a conference this is a great choice. The Bart (train station is only a couple blocks away, there are plenty of stores and good eateries nearby.
I loved the pedestal sink in the room, separated from the bathroom, it gives you flexibility and saves time if you are not traveling alone.
Check out the nearby Chinatown, the Farmer's Market on Fridays and the skating rink at the Oakland Ice Center. Also take advantage of the proximity to Lake Merritt! Check out the Cathedral of Christ the Light while you stroll around the lake.
The Washington Inn is right next to the convention center and a good spot to stay if you're looking for a more boutiquey feel than the neighboring Marriot and Courtyard hotels. It's a quick walk from the BART station. The Inn has a large beautifully decorated lobby with a bar and event space. I didn't see a room as they were all booked and it seems that they often are with the proximity to the convention center and the number of conferences happening in Oakland. Book early if you want to stay.
