I give this restaurant a 5 Star review due to how spicy the food was. This is the first restaurant where I have requested my food very spicy, and it was actually delivered as such!

I can't believe I just discovered Champa Garden this past weekend. While casually chatting with my friend Tony H, he mentioned this is one of his favorite places to eat at. After a day of working out and running errands, I was too lazy to cook dinner and my honey and I ended up here for a casual bite on an early Sat evening.

My tip, come early. We arrived at 6pm and the place is already packed and we were the second group in line. They have a nifty clipboard you write your name on but it's not always in sight. We sat at the bar and asked if we could just eat there instead and the waitress happily obliged. By 7pm there was a huge line out the door and at least 10 parties on the waiting list.

We ordered the Beef Salad, Basil Fried Rice with Chicken and Drunken Noodle with Tofu.

The Beef salad was the best beef salad I have ever had. Perfectly marinated strips of beef cooked with crispy tips and edges on a bed of lettuce, tomato and cucumber slices. The dressing is a cilantro based liquid of perfection. So Good!!!

BF ordered the basil fried rice as he has a love affair with fried rice. I thought it was just ok, the chicken was very tender but overall, I am not a fan of the taste, probably something I wouldn't order again. But you may like it if you are a fried rice fan.

The Drunken Noodles were a huge hit. I had asked to use minimal oil but I think that request got cast aside since the noodles were plenty doused in oil. They tasted fantastic though. The tofu was perfectly fried on the outside and tender on the inside. The mushrooms, cabbage and basil tasted perfect with the large chewy noodles. Carb heaven.

3 dishes set us back around $28 before tip. Not a bad deal. I thought we'd have some left overs but forgot that my BF has a bottomless stomach so we left with happy full bellies. I accidentally left my AMEX behind and the waitress chased us a block down to give it back to me. Just right there will make me go back and eat again. Thanks Champa Garden, the food coma after was totally worth it!

Lao Cuisine. How rare. I don't think I know of another Laotian restaurant in bay area. My exposure to Lao dishes is extremely limited to the occasional offerings from Thai or Cambodian restaurants.

What an unusual location for a restaurant. It didn't seem like there were any other restaurants (or businesses) within 5 blocks radius. Champa Garden certainly stood out in the neighborhood.

Apparently this little gem is no secret among locals. Came here for a fairly early weekend dinner and the dining room was almost fully filled. If we had arrived just a a few more minutes later, there might be a short wait.

Food was decent. Given how extensive the menu is, it is not surprising to find some dishes far superior than others. Let me tell you what I really liked.

Pair of Quails - Under no circumstances should you not order this. The quails was fried to a perfect crispness such that the bones were very brittle while the meat was still not dry. You can pretty much eat the entire thing.

Other decent dishes that were decent but less memorable:

Duck Curry with Eggplant - They were not very generous with the duck meat but the curry was well spiced. A tad on the sweet side but went well with rice.

Larp - Get the Laos style. I think it is a bit too salty and not sour enough. Next time I might just ask for extra lime on the side.

One thing that I would really avoid:

Mango Paradise - While the curry was well flavored and the mango was lovely and sweet, the shrimps were of the quality comparable to those from a grocery store freezer shelve.

I was quite mad at myself for not ordering any sticky rice. How could I not remember that is Laos specialty? Overheard the patrons next to us raving how good the stick rice was, I know I missed out. Oh well... there is always a next time.

Champa Garden is an inexpensive, popular Laotian restaurant in a random area in Oakland that looks like a residential neighborhood. Laotian food is very similar to Burmese or Thai food.

My favorite thing to order here is the fried rice ball salad appetizer. It's sort of like larb. I also like the ginger fish and pumpkin curry. The bill is always astonishingly cheap whenever I come here with friends, with my share usually under $15.

They are open for lunch and dinner, but close between 3 and 5:30. Accepts credit card. Street parking.

Great place for Thai and Laotian food. I love the nam khao here! It's pretty much lettuce wraps. So crunchy and delicious. Get eggrolls too. If you want dessert, I highly recommend the fried banana ice cream :)
