The Oakland Zoo is impressive in size and variety of animals. I really enjoyed the lift with the scenic view of the bay.

The best zoo in the bay area! Large enough so the animals don't look cramped but also small enough to get close to the animals. Great for the whole family!

It's a nice and clean zoo to come and check out animals. Variety of species including children's zoo. Area to improve on would be restaurant inside the zoo.

As far as smaller zoos go, this one is really nice. They really push the conservation angle, which I like (relieves the whole seeing-caged-animals-guilt thing a bit). My favorite by far was the giraffe exhibit -- it's amazing to actually get that close.

So many beautiful animals to visit on these spacious and well maintained grounds. The gondola is fun, but there isn't really that much to see, accept the couple of buffalo near the top and great view of SF in the distance.

I hadn't been to this zoo in years, since I was a kid, but I went recently with a free ticket I received though the library's Discover & Go program.

It's not one of the best zoos, but it is a place that families will enjoy together.

There is a fun aerial ride that takes you above the park for some cool views. It costs a few dollars extra, but it was enjoyable.

One really different part of the zoo was inside the petting zoo, there's a "cat cafe." OK, so there isn't any coffee, but there are some nice kitty cats that you can hold and pet.

This zoo makes a nice day out, but I wish the animals had better facilities and more space. It's an outdated zoo.

Although it's not the biggest zoo, it's quite a well designed one. There's lots of green open space for the kids to run about /picnic. And they put considerable effort in the landscaping. It's nice and green for the tigers...and savannah like for the elephants and giraffes.

Besides walking around to view the animals, you can also get onto a sky lift to view the animals from atop or hop on a train to see the 'Australian wildlife' (4 emus and 6 wallaroos) There are also some fun rides for the kids near the train station.

There is also a children's zoo, where parents can relax over a hot dog while kids climb play structures, explore tunnels or groom some goats.

Note: if you have a Happy Hollow membership card, you get to go in for half price.

A beautiful huge zoo, so that you just can't get enough of it. You can take the zoo train or the lift to get a view of the park (extra payment). If you have a membership for any of the other parks in the bay area (SF zoo or Happy hollow) you get 50% off at the entrance.

The Oakland Zoo is a nice Bay Area zoo--very modern, with your standard animals, plus a petting zoo. There is also an updated playground and rides like a train and carousel. Parts of it are really hilly, so prepare for a workout (and don't forget a stroller if you're bringing smaller kids!).

As a San Diego native, I have pretty high standards when it comes to zoos. Overall, I think the Oakland Zoo makes for a fun afternoon, but it's not a must-see destination or an all day affair like San Diego's. Our visit took about two hours, tops. The animals on display are standard zoo fauna - elephants, a few tigers, monkeys, bears, tortoises, and exotic birds. I laughed when I saw the giant rabbit display, since I would never consider them a zoo-appropriate animal. However, I probably spent way too much time in the goat petting area.

Check flash sale sights for discounts. I scored two tickets for $16.

Parking is not free!

this zoo is not too big. So you can see most in 1 visit. The enclosures are pretty big. I especially loved to watch the elephants there.

One of our favorite spots in the east bay. All 3 of my boys love coming here. The train in the rides area is their favorite part. It goes through a pen with Emu and Wallaroos.

Not a very big zoo, you can easily cover it all in one trip. There are nice places to just sit and enjoy the breeze so having time at hand will always be good.

I loved the giraffe enclosure and spent the most time there.

for less than 10 bucks the oakland zoo is a great place for a nice casual relaxing day. not one of the biggest zoo's but always one of my favorite close to home faves. the animals are plenty for a small zoo and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. last time i was there it was so slow a keeper let me hold a chimpanzee which was a great experience for me. i love this place and i hope more people go so they can grow and be able to keep up with the bigger zoo's. sure the sf zoo is bigger but the oakland zoo is a great alternative to the big crowded zoo scene and so much better!
