Part of the California mission system, this historical site is a functioning church as well. Beautiful.

If you want to ignore the enslavement of indigenous people, it's a hoot. Historically, it's interesting.

Mission San Luis Rey is absolutely beautiful! It's a quiet mission and there is mass in the old mission at noon on most weekdays but other then that the old mission is open almost all day so people can walk in and out.

This mission is humble and beautiful. The church is covered in simple but beautiful designs. The artwork is amazing. The cemetery is rich with history, and the wind chimes make the space magical. My great aunt took me there as a child, and she is buried there now. It was one of her favorite places, and it remains one of mine. I would meditate, read, sit and stare, do something there every day if I could.

The Mission was founded in the late sixteenth century by Franciscan Father Francisco de Lasuen. Although it was one of the last of the Spanish Missions built in California, it was the largest and richest off all the Missions. Interestingly, the Mission was named San Luis Rey de Francia, for the French King, Louie IX, who led the crusades to the Holy Land during the thirteenth century.
