Le Caveau des Oubliettes is a hidden gem, located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, so it's really central (metro: Saint Michel). From the outside it just looks like a typical bar, but venture down into the basement and you'll find a hidden world where you can listen to live music: rock, blues, funk and jazz and they even host jam sessions which are really something special. Although it's a bit on the pricey side and quite small, it is a real highlight and full of charm. Make sure to head over early, because it's quite small the seats are limited!

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

As a native New Orleanian, I possess both a passing familiarity with the French language, and an appreciation for a good jazz club. Le Caveau des Oubliettes, an old timey dungeon jazz club named for the ancient oubliettes where naughty folks were locked away below ground to forget (oublier), lives up to every bit of its potential. If there's a sexier place to bring a date in town, it has yet to be discovered. Be sure to arrive before 9:30 to snag a seat.

I love blues rock ’n’ roll—you know, the kind that consists of a soulful harmonica player, a dirty electric guitar solo and lyrics like “woman you ain’t no good for me.” On Sunday nights Le Caveau des Oubliettes is exactly where you need to go to be seduced by the best live blues in Paris. It’s the oldest jazz bar in Paris, frequented by the likes of Orson Welles and Jean-Paul Sartre, and there’s nothing much to the bar upstairs, but it’s the 12th-century underground wine cellar that draws in the music-savvy crowd. It’s cozy to say the least, so be sure to arrive before 9 p.m. to get a seat.
