Shakespeare and Company is an iconic bookstore with a great selection of both new and old books. You'll be able to find anything from children's books to travel to novels. The staff is quite helpful if you're looking for a specific title and they're quite used to a large amount of visitors wandering their aisles for fun and photos. There are lots of nooks and crannies where you can take a break from your travels and just read or skim books. This is a delightful little space that will remind you to read poetry and smell the roses.

Great place to pick up an English novel or just enjoy getting lost among all the books inside.

New and second-hand English language books are stuffed lovingly to the knobbly rafters of Shakespeare & Co and wind through its two floors up spiralling stairs into passages and alcoves and reading rooms. Once a gathering place for bohemian writers such as Joyce, Miller, Hemingway et al, for 60 years it has flung open its doors to the reading world. With notable appearances in movies Before Sunrise and Midnight in Paris, and Kitty, the shop's fluffy white cat lounging on its great works, Shakespeare & Co is a homely shrine to the written word.

Ah a little bit of English in Paris. If you need to stock up on study books, want something classic to read or if you’re simply just looking for inspiration to write, this small yet chic bookshop will provide you with all the material you need. If it is raining outside, grab a book and read inside. Or better yet, if the weather is good then read in the neighbouring garden opposite the Notre Dame Cathedral. Let your mind run wild with imagination with the help of Sir Shakespeare himself.

This quaint bookstore was featured in Before Sunset and Before Midnight. A great place for book lovers. The staff members speak English and are quite helpful.

Shakespeare and Company has a huge history that I'm sure many literature fans are aware of, from the likes of Sylvia Beach to George Whitman and the writers who frequented the store and grace the shelves today: Hemingway, Joyce, Fitzgerald, Ginsberg, Burroughs, the list goes on... Shakespeare and Company is a very quaint and cozy book store with a lovely library in memory of Sylvia. The store has gained even more popularity due to being featured in films such as Before Sunset which starred both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. Definitely recommend dropping by this place, if you're a book lover you will fall in love.

I love the romantic story behind this little bookstore. It attracts the best of people! Unfortunately the owner has since passed away but it's so visible how much he has influenced the running of the shop and the characters that pass through its doors. There are notes everywhere in praise of the bookshop and I especially like the quote above one of the doorways - "Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise". Very telling of the man who used to own the bookstore! If you're a writer or traveller, you can stay here for free in exchange for reading a book and leaving a review or writing some words. The owner's daughter now runs the place.

Our favourite book store, literally packed to the rafters with tomes and a favourite of Woody Allen's when he visits the city.

It's frequently crowded but mostly just because it's a very small space. Their collection is extensive, and it's a nice English enclave in the heart of Paris.

One of the most famous bookstores in the world, Shakespeare and Company is not only a great Anglophone bookstore in Paris, but also a historically important place for Paris' Anglophone writers. When Lost Generation writers like Ernest Hemingway were living in Paris, Sylvia Beach was a great help to them. She even published James Joyce's first novel when no one else would! Be sure not to miss the upstairs room, which has an old-fashioned typewriter and a piano you can use and a lot of nooks and crannies to explore.

I love going to book readings here or just browsing in one of the many fun quirky rooms. A great time machine into 1920’s Paris and the Lost Generation.

This bookstore is exploding with character and is one of my favorite places to drop by. Books cover the walls from floor to ceiling, there are hidden nooks lurking around every corner and even a piano upstairs for people to play. Typewriters are scattered around and you can just imagine all the literary geniuses that walked through these doors. If you need a book in English while in Paris or are just a book lover then this place is a dream come true! They also put on performances from time to time, I recently saw MacBeth in the neighboring park.

This historical bookshop oozes charm everywhere you look: the shelves full of books, the crooked and tiny alleways, and on the first floor, a piano, a section devoted entirely to reading (with comfy chairs and couches) and you can even spot some beds for writers.
It's also a key spot for Lost Generation buffs and where Ulysses was first published.
Note that this location is not the original one, as the Nazis closed the first bookshop reportedly after Sylvia Beach refused to sell them the last copy of a James Joyce's book. She never re-opened it, but many years later, Walt Whitman established his own english-language bookshop which was renamed "Shakespeare and Company" after Beach died.
It's one of my favorite bookstores in the world and well worth a visit, steps away from Notre-Dame.

A very special place indeed with a very good selection of books. I'd suggest checking out the bookstore's page on Facebook if it has any special events before going there.

I'm a writer and I'm a reader and this is my favourite book store anywhere in the world. Get lost in the catacombs and imagine Hemingway slumped in the corner reader - he did.

Yes, I'm an English Lit major, but that doesn't mean that regular folks can't enjoy this tiny bookstore stuffed to the brim with paper-backed treasures, too. It's delightful to step off the rapidly modernizing streets of Paris into this timeless, stuffy place, where some of the world's best writers have set foot. My best afternoons in Paris were spent happily whiling away the hours in front of the bookstore front, people watching and reading passages from an old favorite.

Great feeling, but very overpriced, and disappointing in that it isn't the same location as Hemingway et al used to visit...
