Paris Vacations

While Paris sometimes feels like a caricature of its own romantic perfection, the real Paris doesn't start to come alive until you interact with it in person. Start by smiling back enigmatically at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. Then assess the grand Champs-Élysees and other boulevards from atop the Arc de Triomphe. Wander the orderly streets past ... flower shops and fresh vegetable stands until you reach the Jardin du Luxembourg, where you can watch families sail model sailboats in the historic fountains. Save Gustav Eiffel's masterpiece, The Eiffel Tower, and the lights of Paris, for the evening. As one of the most hyped cities in the world, Paris both lives up to and surpasses its clichés. Yes, locals spend hours sipping coffee in streetside cafes. No, Parisians do not seem to gain weight, no matter how much delicious French food they eat. Sure, your waiter might scoff if you say 'thank you' instead of 'merci,' but even this is starting to change. Paris is, gasp, modernizing. Gone are the smoke-filled restaurants (à fumée is outlawed in all public buildings) and perhaps soon, the 35-hour work week. But the romance will always stay.

The cliché goes that Paris in springtime (Billie Holiday, anyone?) is the ideal time for a visit, but Parisians will tell a different story. Winters are cold but festive, and autumn sees the Vendange, fashion ... Read more

Consider that July and August are high season in Europe, and along with nice weather bring lots of tourists; a queue to enter the Louvre or other museums is much more likely.

Solo Female Travel Tips

Paris is a generally safe city but "the train stations at night are not the greatest location." "Avoid the Barbès- Rochecourt metro stop (in Northern Paris) after 10pm." A tip for the Metro was to not "sit close to the door on Paris trains -- ... Read more
sometimes people have their bag snatched as the perpetrator gets out just before the door closes." One theme was that after the attacks of the last few years, some are "...worried unnecessarily that things had drastically changed in France due to the media…(but) awareness is always important... to make sure it doesn't translate into…fear." As to dress, "if you look put together in a skirt or slacks, people will treat you better."

I love Paris and its cultural heritage (Montmatre, Notre Damme, Louvre, Eiffel tower, etc.). It is a little expense but it's worth.
