Beautiful region on the Maine coast around Route 1 and the Penobscot Bay with lots of opportunities for water sports. A quieter, cheaper, but scenic alternative to Acadia NP.

To this day, the single best vacation (like, relax down to the bones vacation) I think I've ever taken was a six-night windjammer cruise through Maine's Penobscot Bay. I went on the J&E Riggin (which I would highly recommend; the co-captain/cook has written two cookbooks), but there are a dozen historic windjammers that ply these waters from one to six night trips. Each one ends with a lobster bake on the beach and sails through some of the most gorgeous New England beaches and islands imaginable. Staying on dry land isn't so bad, either. Cute 200-year-old towns, beautiful architecture, gorgeous scenery.
