Perugia is perched on a hill. The train and bus stations are at the bottom of the hill. Instead of running a funicular up the hill, the Perugians excavated through the hill and built a series of escalators and elevators for people to use, free of charge, to move to and from the old center of the town. It's fantastic. The tunnels run through an old fort, Rocca Paolina, with incredible brickwork and vaulted ceilings. It's all beautifully lit and full of displays on the history of public transportation. The fort itself was built incorporating the homes of the wealthy doomed when the fort was constructed. It also hosts changing art displays and even a monthly antiques market.
