From what I gather, this hotel has undergone several renovations, and ownership has changed hands a few times. Hopefully it will remain Hotel 502 for a long time, because this establishment is awesome. The rooms are simple but funky; the colors and decor look to me like a big, happy dorm room. There's a cute little pool area and a decent gym, and if all goes well, there will soon be a new restaurant. The real luxury of Hotel 502 is its location, smack dab in the middle of Midtown. This is basically the Broadway of Phoenix, with more eateries, museums, and cultural venues than any one traveler can handle. You're even on the same block as one of my favorite local bookstores, Changing Hands. And the routine deals at Hotel 502 make this one of the best bargains in the city.

This hotel is right across the street from the light rail, which makes commuting around Phoenix and to and from the airport easy. It's a little old in a mod-looking sort of way, but no run down. The rooms feature a big bed, TV and a fairly large desk. I could see a business traveler or a budget traveler who's new to the city liking this hotel since it's close by many attractions and not too expensive.

I remember when this hotel was the Days Inn - my boyfriend and I went to go see stand-up and eat at the hotel's old Italian restaurant. Then the hotel become the "Camelback Sahara," and its latest incarnation is the "Hotel 502 on Camelback." I don't know what "Hotel 502" refers to, but there you have it. Obviously, the hotel has undergone many, many changes in recent years. I recently visited and was really wowed by the cool, eclectic decor and upgrades made to the hotel. For example, the lobby now has a nice blue Persian-style rug, plush sofa seating accented with charming peacock pillows, and some interesting desert-inspired wall art. However, my personal impression of the hotel was hurt by the lack of responsive customer service. I had to wait for several minutes in the lobby while waiting for the desk person to wrap up a personal phone call. I can't see this hotel thriving if the employees so easily ignore people in the lobby, especially if there is no one else around. Aside from that customer service hiccup, I was really impressed by all the work done to the hotel. Many of the rooms now have new TVs, and all of them have Keurig coffeemakers. By the way, the hotel is pretty big. From the street, it's hard to take in the hotel's full scope. I wonder if this used to be an apartment complex? Too bad the staff is not more attentive because it would be nice to learn more about the hotel's history.

The Camelback Sahara is a hotel in flux. What was once a Days Inn has been transformed into something – else. Gone is the standard Days Inn garb, replaced by walls decorated in vinyl records. Pictures of tattooed hipsters lounging by a pool are now featured prominently in the hotel’s lobby. By the pool, guests can pose in a stenciled cutout of Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction, an addition which I found personally amusing. Oh, and there’s also an arcade. The Camelback Sahara certainly has its fair share of quirks, but they’re mostly endearing, and perhaps a bit more interesting than your run-of-the-mill budget hotel. The transformation isn’t quite complete: the old Days Inn room numbers still line the halls, and a whole building has been closed for renovations. The rooms themselves seem to be untouched, and offer simply a bed, television and mini-fridge. A five-star location this place is not, but if you’re looking for something with a bit of character the Camelback Sahara may be the place for you.
