If I could give you advice on Fore Street, I would warn you to go in hungry, and even though it will seem like an insurmountable task, do not fill up on bread. The bread comes from the Standard Baking Company, downstairs and in back of Fore Street's main entrance. The bread is amazing, and made just for Fore Street, so you can't go buy a loaf in the morning, like I tried to do. The seafood selection at Fore Street is on point, and abundant in portion. Seriously, you will need your entire appetite. And definitely order the mussels.

Soooo gooood! On the pricey side $$$ but it is worth the investment. Nice atmosphere. You can save a little bit if you don't mind eating at the bar. Rated in the top 50 gourmet restaurants in the US in gourmet magazine. This place is no joke.

This spot is exquisite. We had the blind tasting experience and it was so decadent! Great staff, perfect location in the heart of the Old Port, and exceptional food you can't get anywhere else.

Amazing. Easily one of the top three spots in Portland to eat. Get there early- they are super busy, especially in the summer. You can also sit at the bar or eat a smaller menu in the lounge. All the meats are delicious.

Famous for good reason. Spacious restaurant with open kitchen in the middle. Local ingredients. Big, seasonal menu should appeal to all.

Sometimes repurposed buildings and warehouses make the most interesting venues. Take the Fore St. Restaurant as an example, the combination of a thoughtful makeover, interesting open kitchen layout, and excellent cuisine make for a great dining experience.

My favorite was the oven fired mussels appetizer, and the grilled fish. Not at all touristy of a feel like I've been told Dimillos could be

This place won the James Beard Society, "Best Restaurant in New England" Award a few years ago but that does not really describe what Sam Hayward and his team do here. His seafood mongers are the heart of the Maine Coast and he features seafood and steaks beyond compare. It's in an old red-brick Pontiac dealership, smartly configures with a nice bar in the oil bay and an open kitchen in the main room with boths and tables that look out the old garage windows to Commercial Street and the Oyster Docks. Some roast is turning on a spit, flames are leaping around saute pans, lots of starched, white cotton and smiling faces are bringing you big drinks, fine wines and the place is a happy buzz. Look for the (local) striped bass in the early summer and the "Maine Shrimp" in February and March. Both unique and exceptional if you like seafood.

We go every time we're in Portland and are never disappointed. OK, maybe we shouldn't have brought the 2 year old, but he still enjoyed the food (it helps that you can see everything in the open kitchen). Service is always excellent, and waiting at the bar is a pleasure.

This restaurant could fit right in in NYC; but with friendlier Maine staff!
