I know this area because I used to work over here, and it can be a little skuzzy, so was wondering why the reviews were so good for Nordic Motel, but then I checked it out, and I think it might be my pick for a simple hotel near the airport. It's been recently redone, so it's clean, the reception is friendly, there's a basketball hoop, free coffee in the morning, plenty of parking, and I've been to the couple of mexican places on this street and they are good; I think one is even a drive-through mexican stand if you're that desperate. The whole place is nonsmoking, so rooms smell fine, and you're only a couple miles from the airport and the chain hotels right near the airport. There are other motels right on sandy and in this area near Gresham that look similar to this one, but they are more weekly/monthly places as opposed to this one which has a nonresidential vibe.

The Nordic Motel couldn’t be named more appropriately. The yellow painted one story buildings with green trim all in a U-shape, had me wondering if children with braided pigtails would be running out to welcome me Sound of Music style upon my arrival. The man behind the front desk was a Pacific-Islander in a beanie and, though extremely friendly, crushed my visions of running down hills hand-in-hand with Julie Andrews anytime soon. Still I liked the family/commune feel of the place. The rooms are separated by short term and extended stays and both are small and clean with sporadic upgrades like granite counter tops in some and large tile flooring in the bathrooms. The airport is only five minutes away, but there isn’t much to do in the neighborhood so I would suggest a rental car for those flying in. From there downtown Portland, OMSI, and the zoo are all within roughly fifteen minutes.

If you are looking for a cheap motel near the airport, the Nordic Motel would be a good choice. As the motel is located off a busy street in a run down neighborhood it was surprising to find such good quality.

The Nordic, for a drive-up-to the-door motel I found quite calm and charming. Although I would not want to stay at the motel more than a night or two at best, the newly renovated room I was in was very comfortable, clean, quiet, and had an atmosphere of peace. Close the door and you could imagine yourself in a more expensively priced hotel.

So, yes I would recommend this motel for anyone who is passing through and needs a no- frills comfortable well appointed, and relatively cheap, room for the night!

The Northeast strip of Portland’s Sandy Boulevard is not the first place I would think of when looking for a place to stay. It’s one of the more economically-depressed parts of town and its only major redeeming factor is that it’s close to the airport.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this place is. The Nordic Motel looks pretty average from outside, but the rooms here are much nicer than you’d expect. All the spotless rooms have been recently refurbished and all the linens, upgraded. The bathrooms are in better condition than in many business and luxury hotels. Plus, the staff here are genuinely friendly.
There’s not much of a lobby, but the small reception area is well-stocked with complimentary tea and coffee. If you prefer espresso drinks, you can get lattes and mochas from the coffee cart across the street.
