Hotel Rose, which was Hotel 50 up until October of 2013, is right on the water front. Rooms have views of the Willamette, espresso machines, ipod docks, and big, soft beds. The hotel bar is under construction right now, but has a big fire place and potential, but for now the only option for food is room service. That's not a big deal though, because the hotel is right down town, so there are lots of places right in walking distance. Rooms with a view of the river are also right on Naito Parkway, so you can hear a little traffic. The decor is more modern than most of the hotels downtown. I like the rooms a lot, and I appreciate the little touches, small cupcakes at check-in, fresh roses, a copy of "Portland Monthly" in the rooms, and although it's not exactly elegant (the photograph wall paper behind check in reminds me of a Subway shop) it might be on its way there. I just found out there are bikes to borrow. So I'm adding another star. You can ride anywhere in Portland from here. If you just want a scenic ride, cross the river and use the East Bank Esplanade, if you pass Omsi and keep going straight, this can be a huge ride if you want. I think it's a sweet idea to have bikes at the hotel, and they come with helmets and locks, and if you want to bus it back, you can put your bike on the front of Trimet busses.

The Hotel 50 touts itself as a chic, modern hotel, but it’s really just a notch up from a motel, only with more expensive rooms and $22/day parking. Unless you get a massive discount, there’s really no reason to stay at this place. Both of the rooms I saw here were small, incredibly stuffy, and humid. That said, there is free Wi-Fi, and all the rooms have fridges and 42” flat screen TVs,and Ipod docks. The bathrooms are also nice and have rain showerheads. Many of the rooms also have good views of the riverside Waterfront Park across the street, and I could see the appeal of staying here during Cinco de Mayo (in May), the Rose Festival (in June), or during the many summer music festivals that take place in the park.

If you are looking for a cozy, friendly, intimate hotel, this is not it.

Located near the river in Portland just off the main downtown area, the Fifty has the look of fifties-style business hotel with good views of the river. The atmosphere and ambience is cool to cold with very bright lighting and mid- 20th century decor that does not give the feeling of comfort or care. I was told there was a recent renovation, but I imagine that was in 1950!

The room I visited was adequate but not special and the floor hallway was very brightly lit and dated.

It is convenient for shopping and other attractions of the downtown area, but for the high price of a room, parking, and uninterested service it is not an attractive hotel.

Great location near transportation and downtown. Just across the road from the Riverfront. Staff was nice and so tuned into security that they wouldn't let me into my room until my friend, who made the reservation arrived. Good bar and restaurant in hotel.
