Screen Door presents a celebration of southern cuisine as experienced by us as southern natives from the quintessential hearty fare to the everyday foods gathered fresh from the garden. Central to our ... Read more
concept is making use of the similar rich bounty of local fresh produce found here in the northwest that we often took for granted growing up in the south. At Screen Door we serve local and organic produce and meats everyday. Screen Door is a part of maintaining the connection between farm and plate and simultaneously presenting a revival of regional American cuisine through the historical methodologies and preparations found in the south. Screen Door’s menu is a survey of the south, from South Carolina Lowcountry cuisine to soul food and Cajun one-pot cookery to the refined Creole and French preparations found in New Orleans. We explore all methodologies and preparations from the historical to the modern, from the rudimentary to the refined, from the low-brow to the high-brow, cutting across class distinctions to get at the heart of the matter, the food.

If you're looking for soul food to fill that emptyg spot in your heart this is the place. Their chicken and sweet potato waffles are to die for and are featured on their breakfast and lunch menu. If you happen to be in for lunch the Mac and cheese is a must it's topped with a thick layer of cheese and is mouth watering

Hearty southern food! Great for brunch, but get there early, it's super popular now. Lines, ugh.

This restaurant put in an appearance on the TV show Portlandia, and it does have some interesting menu items. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, and we got a table right away, but I did notice shortly after we got there that there were people waiting for tables. I ordered the banana foster french toast, but be warned, it was a fairly small dish.

Like everyone and their... has said about the fried chicken at Screen Door, its worth it. I would warn the pieces are YUGE, so 2 pieces was enough for my friend and I to share. We also shared their (ONE) biscuit and gravy with egg and we couldn't finish everything.

We got lucky with the line and wait times. Weekday, early morning. Parking can get tricky in this area, so add some time for finding a space as well.

Great place that serves fantastic brunch items. Those that love chicken and waffles will love to go here. The chicken is nicely fried on the outside but tender in the inside. Be prepared for a long wait during the weekend as even the weekday is at capacity!

Wow wow wow wow wow. Best southern food in Portland. The only thing I've ever had that was better was made by my hero Flossie Ella in her Denver, CO apartment. No joke. Best southern food money can buy.

Always great service, always great food, always huge portions and leftovers for lunch the next day. I've tried many of their menu items and haven't disliked one of them. Get there before they open to secure a spot in the first round of customers for brunch and busy days.

Right around the corner from the inn...this place has lines every night, but they get people through pretty well, very friendly upbeat place and really great Southern food--organics menu, small plates as well as huge portions on entrees and well priced. Outdoor seating too.

Oh Screen Door, you are an evil temptress.

The highly acclaimed fried chicken and waffle alone could feed a party of four was perfectly share between us ladies. The cheesy grits and ham tasted absolutely delicious like a grilled cheese (plus ham) sammy.

Want something light?

Go for the Alabama scramble with fresh fruits and tasty biscuit.

I did not forget about you carnivores. Get them hash with scramble eggs and tortilla to fill that belly.

Your southern cuisine is good, very good, and you're going to make me gain extra pounds just in time for winter.
