tranquil surroundings take you to a place of peace and harmony with waterfalls whispering in the background and koi swimming and playing in the pond. The Tea House, which was constructed in Japan, taken apart and put back together where it currently sits, was done exclusively for the garden. Several celebrations are held in the garden throughout the year, including these Japanese cultural traditions: The Flower Festival, the Spirit Festival, and the Moonviewing.

Nice Japanese Garden although was on the smaller side and the whole thing can be done in about an hour. I recommend going during spring time when things start to bloom.

Beautiful-has recently reopened after being renovated/remodeled. Easy bus ride to location-short and no parking hassle.

An unbelievable place full of serenity and culture. I could honestly spend hours getting lost with my camera. A must see if you're visiting Portland.

Relaxing, scenic and directly next to The Rose Garden. Gorgeous collection of Bonsais. Sand garden is exquisite. Grounds are emaculate and well thought out.

Very pretty. By the sounds of it this is one of the oldest Japanese gardens in the PNW

They had this stupid cafe called Ultima something, food was too expensive, long wait times, and not much variety. I would say it was not worth the wait.

The Japanese Garden is one of the very few tourist attractions in Portland. If you are visiting as a tourist it's worth checking out, it's also nice if you local and looking for something different to do.

I'm not sure what I expected when I came here but I 100% thought it would be bigger.

There is a charge to enter but I felt it was absolutely worth it.

Every Japanese Garden I've been to before and after, I now compare to Portland's. I didn't have a car, so walking here was already an adventure in itself as I took the Wildwood trail from Pittock Mansion. I got lost, met a fellow lost female traveler along the way, and with our sore feet and legs, we finally arrived to the gardens 1.5 hrs later.

And then suddenly we weren't so tired anymore when walking through the beautiful and serene grounds.

There is a Zen garden, a Koi Pond, lots of japanese maples, and other greenery. I visited in the Spring, so I can imagine the fall colors would be even more beautiful.

The star of the garden is the waterfall in the back, set against a backdrop of towering trees. So tall it blocks the sky. I felt small but peaceful.

This is a wonderful garden and would love to visit again when it's in Fall glory!

A Japanese garden done very well with a tea house. Can be calming but also can be overwhelming with many tourists.

Get zen with it. Stop and smell the roses, literally. Great scents, beautiful garden and picturesque views.

Having visited the Chinese Garden also, which I found to be more impressive, I didn't rate the Japanese garden too highly. It is larger than its downtown counterpart but there is less to see with a higher entry fee. It didn't help that the tranquility of the gardens were somewhat disrupted by the building works on site. If you visit I recommend waiting until these are completed in 2017.

Beautiful and peaceful. Often interesting exhibits in the main building. Just up from the Rose Garden and near to Pittock Mansion, so a nice all day adventure if you visit all 3.

Get down with your zen self within a stones throw of downtown Portland. Worth the admission for the surprising peacefulness even with crowds. Ideal in early spring as the trees bloom.

Borrowing from Buddhist, Shinto, and Taoist philosophies, the late landscape architect Takuma Tono created a garden true to the traditions of his native Japan. Stone, water, and plants harmonize in the five distinct gardens of this 5.5-acre oasis near the Rose Gardens in Washington Park. Bridges, pagodas, and an authentic teahouse punctuate the landscape of native plants and Japanese imports.

Best Time to Visit: Spring to see the Flat Garden’s weeping cherry erupt into pink blossoms; fall for a colorful canopy in the Natural Garden.
