What's there to say about Powell's that hasn't been said before? It's a modern day shrine to all things literature. If you're a book junkie, you can kill a week in there and find a hidden gem each time. From first editions to signed copies to reasonably-priced beloved classics looking for good homes, it has everything you want and everything you never knew you needed.

The bookstore to end all bookstores! Books for miles... Several floors and always a steady flow of people. Small coffee shop inside also. Be prepared to spend an afternoon here if you love books.

This place is awesome! So much fun to spend an afternoon here. They have so many books that you could hang out here forever and never be bored. New and used books for sale as well as art supplies, coffee mugs, toys and “Oregon” stuff. All kinds of wonderful. It’s a must see if your in the city.

It's a book-lover's heaven. You could live here probably. There are usually heaps of used books to pick from if you don't feel like spending a load, but it is easy to walk out with a fat stack of good stuff.

I am an unabashed lover of bookstores. Have visited independent bookstores all around the country. This is the mothership! If you are a book lover do not leave Portland until you visit here.

Awesome book store! Of course parking stinks and it's either garage or street parking but they have an amazing collection of books. The place itself is so large and what a totally unique layout.

Absolutely a book-lover's dream. Don't be fooled: this place is not overrated. It's several floors filled with used and brand new books, plus journals, bags, and quirky gifts. Everything well organized, and even though it's enormous, and I have a mediocre sense of direction, I didn't get lost. You can look up books on computer databases on every floor (or ask at the info desks) and everyone is always willing and able to help you find what you need. It's a very well-oiled machine. I could have spent days upon days in here; alas, we sufficed with several hours and about 12 books between the two of us (including Christmas gifts for family.) Plus, there is a coffee shop where you can sit and read - either books you've purchased or books you borrow from the shelves - all day long if you want to.

Pro Tip: Do not forget to head to the very top floor and ask for a pass to the Rare Book Room. It offers rare, antique, autographed, first edition books - some available for thousands of dollars behind glass cases.

Powell's City Books is by far one of the highlights of Portland if you visit this beautiful city. If you ask locals for advice I guarantee you they will tell you to pay a visit this really cool, hipster bookstore.

I personally have never been to such a place. I think this 4-5 story building was a warehouse before. You can get lost for hours. It's a maze with free wifi and a coffee shop. A bookstore sounds boring but I promise you this won't be.

This place is huge with both new and used books. There is something like four floors to the building, and it almost feels as if you're moving through a maze as you make your way through some of the various rooms with books, only to find yourself in a room you'd already been in, but arriving via a different direction. The various rooms have different categories of books in them, and you could spend an afternoon here looking at the various books.
