Cerro Rico's silver has long gone, but its mines still operate, men and boys searching for less lucrative ores, such as tin. Many former miners lead tours into the bowels of the hill, allowing visitors to experience the working mine. Don't sign up thinking a tour will be fun; it is a hellish place, one that both shocks and educates. Descending beneath the ground here, however, does provide an awakening and important insight into working life in Bolivia, an incredibly poor nation. Tours include claustrophobic tunnels, rickety ladders and extreme temperatures. Health and safety is non existent, the tools extremely basic. Chewing coca leaves is said to combat the poor ventilation, and are distributed by guides.

The cerro rico, while no longer the rich silver mine it once was is still in use today. If you have time take a tour with one of the local miners. Learn about the mine, and a lot of interesting cultural traditions surrounding the mining trade.

Usually the first stop on this mine tour is the liquor store where you buy pure alcohol, coca leaves, and dynamite to give to the miners you will visit. You then climb up the mountain in a jeep and are dropped off at one of a myraid of entrances to the mine. You proceed inwards with a guide, while small children are dynamiting farther down below. The walls are covered with asbestos, so do not touch them, and everything is dark. Not the safest tour by any means, but a reality check for what all these boys are doing.
