restaurants, and just about every outdoor adventure you can think of (a horseback-rafting-zipline-fishing-trekking trip, anyone?) it's no surprise that Pucon has become one of Chile's most popular destinations.

Among the many magic places on the Andes, Puck is in it's own category. Now firmly established on the tourist trail, has become more expensive, but the infrastructure and tour opportunities has become also better

There aren't many towns in the world where you can come out of a grocery store and see the towering majesty of a smoking volcano. Pucon, gateway to the Chilean lake district, started off as more of a staging post and grew into a thriving resort. Today it seems the pendulum has swung a little too far towards catering for tourists. The town of Villarica, about 30 minutes' drive away, offers more authenticity.

Pucon is a charming part of the lake district in Chile, and reminded me of Oregon or Washington in the US. Black sand beaches make the lake a landmark, and a good place for an easy weekend of camping and lounging, or a good base camp to climb Mt. Villarica

Just a short flight from Santiago (or a longer overnight bus ride), this little Lake District town makes for a great adventure base camp. Must-dos in the region include hot springs and if you're up for a thrill, volcano climbing.

Absolutely incredible. Please do the walk up to the crater if you get the opportunity, it really was the highlight of my trip to Chile.

The volcano from your 5th grade science project exists in Chile. And, yes, you really can climb that volcano and look down into the crater.

Pucon is definitely worth a visit. Amazing volcanoes, great water (reminds me a but of Lake Tahoe.) There are 40 minute boatrides around the lake for about 5,000 pesos (which is about ten dollars. You can also rent jet skis. The place is wonderfully clean and very international.

This is a very charming small town/ski resort in the south of Chile. I went there with my dad, step mom and sisters and it's definitely a spot for the family. My younger sister learned how to ski for the first time here, while my baby sister was being taken care of at the hospitality center so all of us could go out and hit the slopes. We stayed at the Gran Hotel Pucon, about 20 minutes from the mountain, which proved to be a smart choice since there isn't much infra structure immediately around the mountain.
If you're looking for a typical (larger) south american resort in the Andes, you might want to look at other options since you won't find that many pistes for more advanced skiers/riders...there's sort of a humble atmosphere in Pucon, but it's a great one: people were very friendly to us, the food is good and not too expensive and there's plenty of snow.
If you can, stay at the Gran Hotel Pucon...after a whole day riding, there's nothing like hitting their pool and their spa.

Went on one of the most relaxing and scenic bike rides in a long time! about 40km, with a view of the volcano. It was amazing. This town also has wonderful little restaurants, a bit overcrowded with tourists, but you can find your place in nature and in a good hostel (they are abundant in this town!).

Very cool little town in the lake district. Main attraction is Volcan Villarica, a huge, snow covered active volcano that you can climb (with a guide) and look inside to see the lava! You need a guide to get to the top (there are plenty in town), and typically the hike requires ice picks and crampons to help you grip the ice. I had a friend who climbed one day when the volcano was shooting rocks into the air. I have climbed it twice, and that never happened though.
