Visit here on a spring day and it's hard to believe you're in the shadow of one of Chile's most active volcanoes - and one which, one day, will unleash its full destructive power on the immediate area and so much further. Yet contrast that with beautiful green meadows, animals grazing and flowers in bloom. Absolutely stunning.

This spectacular hike up Mount Villarica still ranks highly on my list of absolute musts for South America. From start to finish you are spoilt for stunning views, starting with the imposing sight of Mount Villarica bellowing smoke before you ascend, and ending with magnificent panoramic views over the valley once you reach the summit. To top off the experience you then sledge back down the snow-capped volcano at a rather frightening speed, leaving the bubbling lava behind.

I climbed this active volcano twice. The climb is challenging and spectacular - you need ice picks and crampons on the top to grip the snow as it is somewhat steep. From the top, you get spectacular views of the countryside (including other volcanoes) and can peer into the crater. When I was there the mountain would shake every 20-30 mins and you could watch the lava bubbling up far below. The volcano erupted in March, 2015, so check local conditions before you go. You need a guide for this hike, and there are many in town you can find.

Mt. Villarica is a gorgeous and fairly easy climb. There are a number of guiding companies who will take groups of tourists up the dormant volcano, and equip you with gear. I had some climbing experience, so was surprised we didn't use crampons or rope up towards the summit, which was exposed and icy. It was worth the climb and the view!
