Puerto Plata Vacations

Puerto Plata, more properly known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata, is the capital of Puerto Plata Province in the Dominican Republic. While you might, quite rightly, associate the Dominican Republic with golden beaches and turquoise seas – and there are plenty gorgeous beaches to explore in Puerto Plata – there is lots more to explore in the city. ... Ocean World is the largest adventure park in the Caribbean, set amongst the charming reefs of the Beach of Cofresi, and is home to dolphins, Malayan tigers, fish bowls, a marina and even a casino. For a more historic taste of the city, the cast-iron El Faro lighthouse was built in the nineteenth century, and La Zona Colonial contains wonderful wooden Victorian houses. The main colonial monument is the sixteenth century fort, which was declared a National Monument in 1980, and on top of the Pico Isabel de Torres – the highest point of the city – is a botanical garden and a replica of the Rio Christ the Redeemer statue. Finally, the carnival celebrations, which take place in February and March, are a lively and colourful fusion of Spanish and African influences.

If you’re heading here during the summer, keep in mind that the Dominican Republic is very vulnerable to hurricanes that blow through the Caribbean, especially during August and September. We stayed in Puerto Plata but hanged out at the beach in Sosua. Puerto Plata is a small town, not much to do except for taking the tram up the hill to see the view.

Due to the horrible resort I stayed at, I don't have very fond memories of Puerto Plata. The congested center of town is surrounded by gated resorts and communities. I won't return.

This is the city - more like a town, where you arrive if staying at the eastern end of the Dominican Republic. Look out for the airport buildings, they're covered in palm leaves! All the people are friendly but poor too.
