Independence square is a beautiful spot, lined with shops and restaurants. There always seems to be something happening here! However, keep an eye on your wallet as we were warned several times of pickpockets in the area.

Plaza Grande or Plaza de la Independencia is the main plaza of Quito. On the southwest of the plaza you can find Quito's cathedral. Even though it not as ornate as the other churches in the Old Town, it has amazing works from Quito School. Next to that, you have a monument called momumento de la independencia in the middle of the Plaza. Next to that you can find the Archbishop's Palace there too, where the bishop of Quito resides. The plaza is a meeting point of Quito's people

Most important square in Quito, surrounded by the Carondelet Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, the Municipal Palace and the Plaza Grande Hotel.

I liked the Plaza de la Independencia much better than I liked the palacio de la gobierno. When I was there, there were protests (against the current communist, pro-chavez government) in the Plaza, and there were snarling security forces everywhere. I felt very uncomfortable here, kind of like most people would feel in visiting Chavezes Venezuela.

In the center of the plaza is the Independence Monument, inaugurated on August 10, 1909 in commemoration of the 100 years of the Declaration of Ecuador's Independence. It consists of three main bodies: below, a dying lion that represents the defeated Spanish troops. In the middle we see the Condor, an icon of Andean nations breaking free from the chains of oppression; on top, we see the Goddess Libertas, Roman diety that represents freedom, holding a torch In her hand. On the monument's pedestal we can read the names of the historical figures and events that made their mark during the independence of Quito and Ecuador.

The main main in Quito, it is grand and full of buildings to gawk at, and restaurants to indulge in.

One of old Quito's nicest plazas and home of the Presidential Palace. I love this place.
