will admit you so that you can browse artifacts, documents and exhibits that enlighten you as to Latvia's occupation. You can visit from 11 AM on most days; you must leave the museum by 5 PM October through April and by 6 PM May through September. You cannot visit the museum on Mondays from October through April, as it is closed, but you encounter enough worthwhile exhibits to go every other day. In particular, you want to spend plenty of time at the permanent exhibition, which educates you about the 3 different occupations suffered by Latvia in the 20th century.

The presentation of the subject matter could use some modernizing but the story of Latvia’s occupation was told in a coherent, balanced way by our guide. The guided tours are optional but add to the humanity of the story.

Pretty awesome and humbling - while we all think we're the center of the whole story, there are entire peoples living sagas we hear nothing about. This is the impression this museum left me with - the anonymous bravery and unsung struggles of many.

By equal turns profoundly heartbreaking and profoundly fascinating, this museum in Riga's old city chronicles the history of Latvia, covering the Soviet occupation of the country, during and after WWII. It's an interesting lens through which to view the history of 20th-century Europe, from a minority viewpoint that is seldom considered. An hour here gives one a very good idea of why Lativians experience such a sense of pride in their nation and culture, which have survived against enormous odds.
