Rio de Janeiro Clubs for 2014

The club scene is changing in Rio. Clubs used to promote their weekly schedule, but now it's all about freelance promoters throwing private label parties at different venues. So now the Cariocas are follow their favorite parties, instead of hitting their regular clubs. For visiting night owls, this means that a venue may be awesome today, but terrible a week from now, as the party will probably have moved to another venue...or not! So what to do if you've flown in for the week and your finger isn't on the pulse of all the local promoters' lists? Here are the clubs that still have their own party every week, and therefore where you've got the best chance of having a blast every time.

Casa Rosa

550 Rua Alice, Rio de Janeiro, RJ 22241-020 Brazil

Great from friday to sunday as a place to meet lots of unpretentious, fun local singles. Great bands, dj and dance floor. On Sundays they have feijoada starting at 5pm, so get there early, as it packs.

Palaphita Kitsch

Av. Epitácio Pessoa, S/N - Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 22471-003, Brazil

Rio`s best outdoor lounge, even though there aren`t many. Free entrance but expensive drinks. Gets bouncier on thursday to saturday, with a "market" feel to it. Dress up, as it`s Rio`s trendier crowd.

Barzinho

Rua Do Lavradio 170 | Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A late comer to the Lapa scene, Barzinho strives to bring a touch of hippness to Rio`s bar hopping area. Very good DJ and food, the only problem then becomes that most of Rio`s hip crowd aren`t heading to Lapa anymore...luckily the few that do head to Barzinho.

Rio Scenarium Pavilhão da Cultura

R. do Lavradio, 20 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 20230-070, Brazil

After 12 years, still Rio`s pride and joy. The crowd is not as hip as it used to be backin 2006, but the place still bumps every night they open. Beautiful decorations, lively brazilian music bands (samba, forro and MPB), a DJ dance floor in the annexed building and great finger foods and drinks makes this a must for anyone visiting Rio.

Casa da Matriz

R. Henrique de Novaes, 107 - Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, 22281-050, Brasil

The concept may have worn out a bit, but still a fun place in Rio: an eternal house party, with 2 dance floors and lots of hangout areas with sofas and video games and hip shops etc. Starts late and finishes when the bakeries are on their 3rd batch of warm bread, so you can satisfy at least one appetite.

00 (Zero Zero) -- CLOSED

Avenida Padre Leonel Franca 240, Rio de Janeiro 22450 Brazil

Great club with an outdoor lounge, inside club and restaurant, so you can enjoy the different settings throughout the night. Just check their site to see which night is what party, as they can vary from urban to bubble-gum to LGBT.

Nuth Lounge -- CLOSED

Avenida Armando Lombardi, 999, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 22640-020, Brazil

THE meat market of Rio. Everyone is single, even if they are married. Different music styles on different nights of the week, so approach with caution, as they have brazilian funk, sertanejo universitario and pagode on some nights, which are very cheesy and obnoxious, just like the crowd.

Circo Voador

R. dos Arcos, s/n - Lapa, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 20230-060, Brazil

One of Rio`s funnest live music venues, mostly because of its origins in the Cazuza 80s. Fits around 4000 people, so it is large enough to get big names in Brazilian music, while give the audience intimacy with the stage, specially due to the amphitheatre design. Something always on every day. Check their agenda as the big names sell out quickly.

Fundição Progresso

Rua dos Arcos, 24 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 20230-060, Brazil

The place is not comfortable or pretty, but they do get big names in Brazilian music, pack it with 5k partiers and force the band to perform longer than their usual. So in this sense, it is a great place to hear live music, if you know the bands. So check the line up on their site.
